Serie A Analysis

Paulo Dybala attempted 73 passes in 84 minutes against Lecce, compared with 49 across 90 against Atalanta. Roma’s possession was actually higher against Atalanta, 67% versus 64%. Dybala’s contribution fell in both areas: own-half passes from 17 to five and opposition-half passes from 56 to 44. The shorter Lecce appearance was busier because more Roma circulation ran through him, not because he had extra playing time.

Inter offered 46 passes in another full appearance, with 38 beyond halfway, while Fiorentina produced 42 in 79 minutes. Torino’s 28 came in only 64 minutes and belongs to a shorter role. Atalanta’s dismissal occurred in stoppage time, so it cannot explain the ordinary-match distribution that limited Dybala relative to Lecce. For another high passing total, Roma need both enough team exchanges and repeated personal involvement, especially the advanced combinations that supplied 56 passes against Lecce. A possession majority without that distribution is insufficient, even when Dybala remains on the pitch longer.

Donyell Malen attempted five shots in 68 minutes against Fiorentina and five in 67 against Lecce, with most chances coming from assisted play. Against Inter he played the full 90 but attempted only three, through three different situations. More time on the pitch did not reproduce the supply of repeated assisted opportunities. The useful signal for his shot volume is therefore whether Roma can keep finding him as the finisher, not simply whether he is expected to complete the match.

Atalanta also limited him to three attempts in 63 minutes, including two low-value corner efforts and one assisted save; the opponent’s stoppage-time dismissal occurred long after his appearance had ended. Torino provided four attempts in just 57 minutes, including two recorded in the same minute as a very valuable goal. That concentration warns against assuming the count represented a steady stream of separate attacking phases. His prolific Fiorentina and Lecce finishes were supported by repeated service, but goals are a separate outcome from attempts. For another high shot count, Roma need to sustain that personal supply over his likely appearance rather than relying on one decisive chance or extra minutes alone.

AC Milan opened the scoring against Torino, Venezia, Juventus and Lecce, but those four outcomes should not carry equal predictive weight. At Torino, ten first-half shots and 73% possession produced no goal; Milan eventually broke through in the 64th minute. Against Venezia, eight first-half attempts also left the interval scoreless, before Gonçalo Ramos finished a fast break in the 69th minute. Milan’s pressure gave them opportunities to strike first, but it did not make an early goal automatic.

Juventus is the important exception to that pressure-based explanation. Milan scored first through Alphadjo Cissè despite producing only three shots and 0.11 xG across the entire match; his breakthrough was valued at roughly 0.05 xG. Lecce was a stronger example of an opening goal supported by the chance itself: Christian Pulišić converted a roughly 0.59-xG opportunity in the 14th minute. Lazio exposed the opposite risk, scoring in the tenth minute and creating 2.04 first-half xG while Milan had more possession. For the next match, Milan’s ability to create the first clear opportunity matters more than their recent frequency of scoring first. An opponent that threatens efficiently before Milan’s pressure develops can change the sequence.

Juventus won corners 12–3 against Frosinone, 10–2 against Parma, 7–1 against Milan and 9–3 against Sassuolo. The Frosinone margin was established early: nine first-half corners to none, followed by an even 3–3 second half. Parma was different, with Juventus extending a 4–2 first-half edge through a 6–0 second-half count. Both routes created a wide margin, but one depended on the initial surge and the other on pressure continuing while the opponent’s restart supply disappeared.

Milan generated only one corner across the match, while Sassuolo took three despite scoring three goals. Those low opposing counts helped Juventus protect substantial advantages even when the result in goals was disappointing. Atalanta was the exception, beating Juventus 5–4 on corners in a 2–0 Juventus win. Atalanta took two before the break and three after, preventing the kind of one-sided count seen elsewhere. For the next fixture, a wide Juventus margin is better supported when it can combine repeated restarts with an opponent offering little of its own. The Atalanta result shows that winning the match and creating better chances do not guarantee that suppression.

Inter–Napoli was scoreless at half-time, with only 1.02 combined first-half expected goals, before producing five goals after the break. The second-half chance environment changed sharply: Inter created 3.42 xG and Napoli 1.86. Inter’s response to falling two goals behind included nineteen shots and several valuable opportunities. The late scoring was not merely delayed conversion of the first-half pattern; the volume and value of the chances increased substantially.

The Udinese match followed a different sequence, reaching 2–2 at the interval before another four goals. Roma–Inter had two first-half goals and two second-half goals, with Inter providing the response after trailing 2–0. These examples show why game state matters, but Cagliari limits the conclusion: Inter created 2.17 second-half xG there and still added no goal to its early lead. Pressure can create a route to additional goals without ensuring conversion. For the next match, a low interval score should be reassessed if Inter’s attempts and chance quality rise materially and the opponent remains dangerous. The Napoli turnaround is most relevant to that changing environment, not as a reason to assume every quiet Inter first half will erupt.

Roma scored at least twice in each recorded match, but the route became much less secure after the four-goal wins over Fiorentina and Lecce. Those performances produced 3.07 and 3.27 expected goals, with several substantial chances. Against Atalanta, Roma accumulated 2.97 xG through 39 attempts but needed goals in the 89th minute and stoppage time to win 2–1. The scoring shots themselves were valued at only about 0.05 and 0.02 xG. Sustained pressure supported a breakthrough; it did not make that particular late double a routine outcome.

Torino offers a different caution. Donyell Malen’s opener came from a near-certain opportunity, but Roma created only 0.45 second-half xG and its second goal arrived in the 90th minute from a roughly 0.04-xG attempt. Against Inter, Manu Koné converted twice before half-time, after which Roma added only 0.48 xG and one target. The repeated two-goal result therefore combines strong chance production, exceptional finishing and late rescue. For the next opponent, the best support comes from allowing multiple clear chances, as Fiorentina and Lecce did. A match that forces Roma into many modest attempts or restricts the second half could break the scoring sequence without representing a total attacking collapse.

Venezia’s matches with Frosinone and Fiorentina finished with five and six goals, while Lecce, Milan and Lazio each won 2–0. The split is not explained by low danger in every Venezia blank. Venezia–Lecce contained 4.75 combined expected goals, more than the 4.07 against Frosinone and 3.93 against Fiorentina. Venezia’s failure to convert seven targets against Lecce kept the total down, whereas its two difficult finishes against Fiorentina lifted the scoring beyond the chance supply.

Lazio–Venezia’s 3.56 combined xG included a penalty for each team, with Lazio converting and Venezia failing. Milan–Venezia had 3.01, and Milan’s second goal was an own goal. These details matter because the next total depends on both ordinary chance creation and exceptional events. Opponents have often supplied enough danger to score, but a higher total is more securely supported when Venezia can add meaningful chances of its own, as in the Frosinone second half. If its contribution is suppressed toward the Milan level, the opponent must carry more of the scoring; if it creates Lecce-level opportunities, another blank is not the only plausible outcome.

Venezia scored twice against Frosinone and Fiorentina, but the chance totals were 2.17 and 0.58 expected goals. At Frosinone, most of the danger arrived after half-time, including a near-certain Richie Sagrado opportunity as Venezia recovered from 2–0 down. Against Fiorentina, both goals came from attempts valued below 0.10 individually. The identical scoring return therefore combined a meaningful chance platform with unusually effective finishing.

Lecce allowed Venezia 2.05 xG and seven targets without conceding, so that blank does not establish a weaker attacking performance than the Fiorentina two-goal result. Lazio also kept a clean sheet against 1.92 xG, though a saved penalty supplied a large part of the total. Milan allowed only 0.80 xG and two targets, a clearer example of restricted opportunity supply. For the next opponent, the route to two goals is stronger if Venezia can repeatedly reach substantial assisted or transition chances, as it did in the Frosinone response. Expecting another pair of difficult finishes or assuming another penalty would give too much weight to outcomes that are less dependable.

Venezia failed to score against Lecce, Milan and Lazio, but its chance supply was not uniformly weak. Lecce allowed 2.05 expected goals and seven targets; Lazio allowed 1.92 xG and six targets, including a saved John Yeboah penalty. Milan restricted Venezia more effectively, to 0.80 xG and two targets, though a valuable fast-break chance was blocked before Milan scored. The same blank therefore covers strong unconverted opportunities, penalty dependence and more limited access.

Venezia scored twice against Frosinone from 2.17 xG, including a near-certain assisted opportunity during its second-half comeback. The two goals against Fiorentina were less secure underneath, coming from only 0.58 xG and two difficult scoring shots. Opponents created substantial danger in all five matches, but Venezia’s own contribution is the more variable side of a mutual-scoring assessment. For the next fixture, an opponent allowing the meaningful chances seen against Lecce or Frosinone offers a stronger scoring route than expecting another Fiorentina-style conversion return. The Lazio blank should also be qualified: the missed penalty mattered, and ordinary chance supply was lower once that exceptional opportunity is separated.

Venezia beat Lecce 5–3, Milan 3–2 and Lazio 7–2 on corners while losing all three matches without scoring. Against Milan, all three Venezia corners arrived after half-time, reversing a 0–1 interval deficit. Against Lazio, a 5–1 first-half advantage established the margin before Lazio scored. These positive counts reflected restart production rather than an ability to finish the resulting attacks.

Frosinone and Fiorentina were different. Venezia scored twice in each match but lost corners 2–5 and 2–4. Against Frosinone, its second-half attack produced nine shots, 1.68 expected goals and two goals, yet only one corner. A meaningful scoring response therefore did not automatically become a corner response. For the next matchup, Venezia’s likely corner margin depends on how attacks finish and whether the opponent keeps generating restarts of its own. A scoreless run does not rule out a positive count, while an expectation of two goals does not establish one. The Lazio and Milan matches offer two distinct routes: an early restart advantage or a later reversal against a low opposing contribution.

Inter–Udinese produced eight goals from 4.01 combined expected goals. Inter had the stronger attacking platform at 3.11 xG, but Udinese scored three from only 0.90. The 3–2 win at Monza also exceeded its opportunity base, with 2.68 combined xG and another efficient Udinese three-goal return. Those totals cannot be carried forward without considering how much the finishing contributed.

The 1–1 with Como had 3.64 combined xG, while the 1–0 defeat to Cagliari had 3.25. Udinese missed substantial chances against Como and failed to convert sustained pressure against Cagliari, keeping both totals below three despite meaningful danger. Lazio’s 2–1 win contained 2.65 combined xG and a pronounced second-half attacking response from the visitors. For the next fixture, identify whether both attacks can generate worthwhile chances or one side is expected to carry the scoring. An Inter-like opponent can supply substantial danger, but an eight-goal repeat would still require unusually productive finishing. A recent low total may also conceal a more active chance environment than the final score suggests.
