PLAYER PASS ATTEMPTS

Ibrahim Maza: more Leverkusen possession does not guarantee more of the passing runs through him

Ibrahim Maza attempted 37 passes at Elversberg, 55 against Union Berlin and 48 at Augsburg despite Leverkusen’s team passing totals being similar: 582, 579 and 596. He played ninety minutes in each, so neither playing time nor the amount of team circulation explains the full difference. His touches rose from 58 at Elversberg to 87 against Union, and his own-half passes from five to fifteen. The higher count reflected more personal involvement across the possession sequence.

Leipzig reduced Leverkusen’s team total to 484 and Maza’s to thirty, with his opposition-half passes falling to nineteen from 39 at Augsburg. Yet he produced five key passes against Leipzig, more than in the higher-volume Union appearance. Creative impact and pass accumulation therefore need separate expectations. For the next match, a high Maza count is better supported when Leverkusen’s circulation repeatedly reaches him in both halves of the pitch, rather than merely when the team is forecast to control possession. A narrower but more decisive attacking role can still produce chances without a large passing total.

What to watch

Look for Maza’s share of touches and involvement in the buildup, not just Leverkusen’s possession forecast. Union and Elversberg had almost identical team pass totals but very different personal counts.

PLAYER GOALS

Phillip Tietz: the Gladbach goal had stronger opportunity support than the Hamburg double

Phillip Tietz scored twice at Hamburg from four attempts worth only 0.29 expected goals, converting both targets. At Mönchengladbach he scored once, but the goal came from a major throw-in opportunity worth roughly 0.86 xG. The smaller goal return therefore rested on the more substantial chance. Frankfurt also allowed a stronger overall platform than Hamburg: six attempts and 0.94 xG, including a valuable set-piece miss before a late goal from another throw-in situation.

Paderborn kept Tietz scoreless despite three attempts, with a corner effort hitting the post and a later assisted chance missed. He played ninety minutes in every recorded appearance, so the variation is not explained by substitute minutes. For the next match, the most useful distinction is whether Mainz can deliver valuable restart or assisted opportunities, rather than whether Tietz has recently scored twice. His involvement in throw-in situations offers a concrete route, but the Hamburg double required unusually effective finishing from modest chances. Reproducing the stronger Gladbach opening is a more convincing basis for another goal than expecting both targets to become goals again.

What to watch

Look for valuable service from throw-in situations or other restarts. Tietz’s minutes have been stable; the quality of the chances, not playing time, separated the supported Gladbach goal from the efficient Hamburg double.

PLAYER GOALS

Yuito Suzuki: the Bremen hat-trick combined good chances with perfect finishing

Yuito Suzuki scored from all three attempts against Bremen. The opportunities were meaningful—roughly 0.33, 0.32 and 0.74 expected goals—but converting every one still made the three-goal return more efficient than a routine expectation. Paderborn then allowed only two modest assisted attempts worth 0.18 xG, one missed and one blocked. The blank reflected a much weaker chance supply, not simply a failure to repeat the same finishing performance.

Mönchengladbach allowed one valuable fast-break chance, which was saved before its 52nd-minute dismissal. Suzuki made no further recorded attempt despite playing until the 78th minute, so a numerical advantage did not automatically enlarge his personal shooting role. Frankfurt allowed two assisted attempts worth 0.42 xG, with one goal and one block. His minutes remained in a narrow 78–83 range across these appearances, making the quality and number of chances the more useful explanation for the scoring variation. For the next match, a strong goal case needs the valuable service seen against Bremen or Frankfurt; the hat-trick itself should not stand in for evidence that those openings will recur.

What to watch

Look for valuable assisted or transition chances reaching Suzuki. Stable minutes and even a team numerical advantage have not guaranteed several attempts, while Bremen’s perfect conversion is a ceiling rather than a normal return.

PLAYER GOALS

Patrik Schick: repeated goals have come through different service and accuracy profiles

Patrik Schick scored against Elversberg, Union Berlin, Augsburg and Leipzig, but the sequence does not mean each appearance offered the same scoring security. Union allowed four attempts worth 1.04 expected goals in 67 minutes, including a substantial assisted chance that he converted. Elversberg allowed five attempts worth 0.65 xG across ninety minutes, but four missed the target and the goal came from a corner. The scoring outcome matched despite a different supply and accuracy pattern.

Augsburg was a short 27-minute appearance containing four attempts and a late assisted finish; that concentrated spell should not be projected mechanically into a full-match rate. Against Leipzig, all four attempts were assisted situations, three reached the target and one became a goal, offering a clearer picture of repeated service. For the next opponent, the strongest route is sustained access to useful assisted chances, with corners providing an additional source. A long appearance helps opportunity, but the Augsburg and Elversberg contrasts show that minutes alone do not determine the count or conversion. The perfect scoring sequence remains dependent on at least one of those routes delivering.

What to watch

Look for repeated assisted service and enough playing time, rather than assuming the scoring sequence continues automatically. Union and Leipzig offered different degrees of clear opportunity; Elversberg needed the corner route when the other attempts missed.

PLAYER GOALS

Hugo Bolin: the Elversberg double came from restarts, while ordinary chances have been modest

Hugo Bolin scored twice against Elversberg, once from a corner and once from a throw-in situation. Six attempts produced about 0.67 expected goals, and both targets became goals. The restarts supplied the scoring route; the double should not be read as evidence that every six-shot appearance carries two-goal potential. Against Leipzig, Bolin had four attempts and two targets without scoring, including a corner chance and an assisted effort that were saved.

Mainz limited him to two modest attempts in 84 minutes, with one saved and the other blocked. Freiburg was a shorter, shotless 45-minute start; Bolin had left the match before Gladbach’s 52nd-minute dismissal, so the red card cannot explain his own lack of attempts in that appearance. For the next fixture, a stronger scoring case requires access to useful restart situations or improved assisted chances, together with a substantial role. The Elversberg conversion shows a route that can work, but the Leipzig and Mainz outcomes demonstrate that targets alone do not guarantee a goal when the opportunities remain modest.

What to watch

Look for Bolin receiving valuable chances from corners or throw-in situations, rather than simply extending his Elversberg double. Also separate a shortened appearance from a full-match decline in shooting involvement.

PLAYER SHOTS ON TARGET

Younes Ebnoutalib: the hat-trick is a poor shortcut for predicting his next target count

Younes Ebnoutalib scored from all three attempts against Union Berlin, but five attempts at Augsburg produced only one target. Three of the Augsburg efforts missed and one was blocked, while a substantial chance was saved. His opportunity value was actually higher at Augsburg, about 0.84 expected goals against 0.68 versus Union. The fall in goals and targets therefore did not mean he had stopped receiving useful chances; accuracy and shot outcomes changed.

Freiburg allowed three attempts worth 1.33 xG, but only one reached the target: a near-certain assisted opportunity that became a goal. Another substantial chance missed. Mainz was a different limitation, with only sixteen minutes and no attempt, so that appearance cannot be treated like a full-match failure of service. For the next fixture, multiple targets need both enough playing time and repeated attempts directed past defenders and onto goal. The Union hat-trick demonstrates an exceptional perfect return, while Augsburg and Freiburg show why strong chance value or a scoring opportunity can still produce only one target.

What to watch

Separate minutes, attempt supply and accuracy. A full appearance with useful chances is necessary evidence, but another three-from-three target return should not be assumed from the Union hat-trick.

PLAYER PASS ATTEMPTS

Antonio Nusa: Leipzig’s possession surges have shifted his passing forward more than increased the total

Antonio Nusa attempted 29 passes against Mönchengladbach, 31 at Bremen, 29 against Hamburg and 29 at Leverkusen. Leipzig’s team totals varied much more, from 427 against Mönchengladbach to 691 at Bremen, with possession rising from 47% to 71%. Nusa did not inherit that increase proportionately. At Bremen, thirty of his 31 passes were recorded in the opposition half, compared with 22 of 29 against Mönchengladbach. The environment changed where he participated more clearly than how often he passed.

Minutes also matter: Nusa played 84 at Bremen and 78 against Hamburg, compared with ninety in the other two appearances. The stable totals therefore do not imply identical passing rates, but neither do they justify projecting a large volume simply because Leipzig dominate the ball. His attacking outputs varied independently, with three key passes against Hamburg and none at Bremen. For the next match, a higher passing expectation needs evidence that more of Leipzig’s circulation will involve Nusa, together with sufficient playing time. Strong team possession alone has mainly moved his involvement into the attacking half rather than doubled his total.

What to watch

A Leipzig possession advantage is insufficient by itself. Look for Nusa taking a larger role in repeated circulation and retaining a long appearance, rather than assuming Bremen-level team passing automatically lifts his own count.

PLAYER PASS ATTEMPTS

Anton Kade: the Schalke passing increase needs a role check before becoming a new expectation

Anton Kade recorded 26 passes in ninety minutes against Schalke, with nineteen in the opposition half. That is above his final four full-match appearances in the previous Bundesliga season, when he attempted sixteen against Union Berlin, nineteen against Mönchengladbach, 21 against Bremen and sixteen against Frankfurt. The current-season evidence contains only the Schalke appearance, so it cannot yet establish a new regular passing level.

The team context also limits a simple possession explanation. Augsburg attempted 410 passes against Schalke, fewer than the 448 in the previous Union game, yet Kade’s own count was ten higher. His personal involvement changed more than the team total. Schalke’s Ron Schallenberg was sent off in the 62nd minute, adding a substantial numerical-advantage phase that the earlier comparisons did not contain. Kade also attempted six shots, illustrating that his involvement included finishing attacks rather than only circulating possession. For the next match, the useful question is whether a long appearance brings a larger recurring share of Augsburg’s passing under normal numbers. The Schalke total provides a possibility to investigate, not enough evidence to assume the role has permanently changed.

What to watch

Require evidence of sustained personal involvement and expected minutes. The higher total came in a match with a long spell against ten players, and the current-season sample does not yet show whether that passing level repeats.

PLAYER PASS ATTEMPTS

Nadiem Amiri: the higher passing total reflected more involvement, not a comparable rise in Mainz possession

Nadiem Amiri attempted 48 passes against Paderborn and 61 at Mönchengladbach, playing ninety and 89 minutes. Mainz’s team totals were fairly close at 461 and 482, and possession changed only from 51% to 53%. The larger personal increase therefore cannot be assigned simply to much more team possession. Amiri recorded 45 opposition-half passes at Gladbach compared with 39 against Paderborn, along with a larger own-half contribution.

Hamburg reduced Mainz’s team total to 350, but Amiri still made 43 passes in ninety minutes, a smaller decline than the team’s overall circulation. His creative outputs did not track total passes: six key passes against Paderborn fell to two at Gladbach despite the higher count. Against Frankfurt, he made 56 passes in 85 minutes, including 38 in the opposition half, while Mainz attempted 477. That provides another example of a substantial personal count without a large rise in team circulation. For the next opponent, a high Amiri passing total is better supported when Mainz repeatedly involve him in circulation across the pitch. More possession can help, but his share of the passing and the distinction between accumulation and decisive creation matter just as much.

What to watch

Look for Amiri’s personal involvement in Mainz’s circulation. Paderborn and Gladbach had similar team totals but different individual counts, while the higher count did not mean more chances created.

PLAYER PASS ATTEMPTS

Maximilian Eggestein: team circulation explains much of the passing range, with Gladbach’s red card qualifying the high

Maximilian Eggestein attempted 54 passes against Bremen, 39 at Paderborn, 66 against Mönchengladbach and fifty at Frankfurt, playing ninety minutes each time. Freiburg’s corresponding team totals were 488, 362, 544 and 456. His personal involvement broadly moved with the amount of team circulation, making Paderborn’s lower-possession environment a useful explanation for the low rather than evidence of reduced minutes or a sudden individual decline.

The Mönchengladbach high needs context: Tim Kleindienst was sent off in the 52nd minute with Freiburg already 2–0 ahead. The full-match total therefore includes a long spell against ten players and should not be treated as an unqualified eleven-against-eleven benchmark. Eggestein recorded 38 opposition-half passes there, compared with 24 at both Paderborn and Frankfurt. Frankfurt also shows that possession percentage alone is incomplete: Freiburg held 58%, but its total circulation and Eggestein’s count remained below the Gladbach game. For the next opponent, sustained team passing and advanced involvement offer the route to a higher total; a numerical advantage is an additional condition, not something to assume will recur.

What to watch

Use Freiburg’s likely passing volume as well as possession share, and qualify the Gladbach high for its long numerical advantage. A Paderborn-like reduction in circulation directly limits Eggestein’s opportunity to accumulate.

PLAYER SHOTS

Marco Grüll: the five-shot Leipzig game was built from late, low-value attempts

Marco Grüll attempted five shots against Leipzig, all after half-time, but they totalled only about 0.11 expected goals. Three came from a set piece or corners, and the goal itself was a difficult finish worth roughly 0.06 xG. The high count therefore reflected access to repeated attempts, especially restarts, rather than a stream of clear chances. It supports a different question from whether he was likely to score.

Grüll’s other long appearances produced one shot in 85 minutes at Freiburg and two each in ninety-minute games against Köln and Augsburg. The single Freiburg transition chance carried almost as much value as all five Leipzig attempts combined. Against Augsburg, a set-piece finish supplied the goal from a two-shot appearance. For the next opponent, a higher shot total needs the repeated restart or late attacking opportunities seen against Leipzig; playing most of the match has not been enough by itself. A smaller number of better chances could still offer scoring potential, while a five-shot repeat made up of difficult efforts would not automatically support multiple targets or another goal.

What to watch

Look for repeat shooting opportunities from restarts and sustained late involvement. Keep that volume separate from scoring quality: Leipzig’s five attempts were collectively little better than the single Freiburg chance.

PLAYER PASS ATTEMPTS

Ridle Baku: Bremen’s high total combined longer minutes with a much larger advanced passing role

Ridle Baku attempted 88 passes in ninety minutes at Bremen, compared with 47 in 73 minutes against Mönchengladbach and 49 in 84 minutes at Leverkusen. Extra minutes explain part of the difference, but Leipzig’s circulation also rose sharply at Bremen: 691 team passes and 71% possession, compared with 427 and 47% against Gladbach. Baku’s opposition-half passes increased from 28 to 62, showing where much of the extra involvement occurred.

Hamburg was a short appearance, with 27 passes in sixteen minutes, 22 of them in the opposition half. That busy spell is evidence of intense involvement during those minutes, not a reliable ninety-minute projection. Leverkusen offers a fuller comparison: Baku played most of the match but recorded only 27 opposition-half passes, close to Gladbach rather than Bremen. For the next fixture, a high total needs both substantial playing time and a Leipzig environment that repeatedly involves him beyond halfway. A long appearance in a more balanced possession contest may still resemble Leverkusen, while a late role can cap the total even if the passing rate is high.

What to watch

Combine expected playing time with Leipzig’s ability to sustain advanced circulation through Baku. Bremen supplied both; Leverkusen supplied the minutes without the same forward passing volume.

PLAYER PASS ATTEMPTS

Michael Olise: similar passing totals can come from a full match or an unusually concentrated spell

Michael Olise attempted 43 passes in ninety minutes against Stuttgart and 42 in only 33 minutes at Schalke. The totals look almost identical, but the environments were very different: Bayern attempted 548 team passes against Stuttgart and 914 at Schalke. Forty-one of Olise’s 42 Schalke passes were recorded in the opposition half. His short appearance was highly concentrated in advanced circulation, so neither raw total alone describes the role or supports a simple minutes extrapolation.

Across full matches, Olise made 65 passes at Elversberg and 62 against Union Berlin. Bayern’s team total was lower against Union, but Olise recorded more opposition-half passes, 56 compared with 52, showing that his personal involvement could remain high even as overall circulation fell. His attacking outcomes differed too: Elversberg brought five key passes, while Union brought six shots and three goals. For the next match, a higher passing expectation needs repeated advanced involvement and sufficient minutes, rather than merely a Bayern possession forecast. The Schalke spell shows a possible rate under extreme control; it is not a safe full-match baseline.

What to watch

Distinguish a long appearance from a short, unusually busy phase. Olise’s advanced involvement can remain strong as team passing falls, but a Schalke-rate projection needs much more than assuming he starts.

PLAYER PASS ATTEMPTS

Luis Díaz: more Bayern circulation has lifted passing without necessarily lifting shooting

Luis Díaz attempted 46 passes against Stuttgart and 72 at Schalke, playing ninety minutes in both. Bayern’s team total rose from 548 to 914, with Díaz’s opposition-half passes increasing from 36 to 66. The higher total fitted a game of sustained advanced possession. His shots moved in the opposite direction, from six to three, so the passing increase should not be treated as evidence of a larger finishing role.

The shorter appearances require separate treatment. Díaz recorded 25 passes in 25 minutes at Elversberg and 31 in 63 minutes against Union Berlin. Elversberg’s brief but busy spell cannot be projected straight across a full game, while Union shows that a substantial appearance in a 68% possession match need not reproduce the Schalke count. For the next fixture, a high passing expectation needs enough minutes and repeated involvement in Bayern’s advanced circulation. If his role is more about completing attacks through shots or if his appearance is shortened, team dominance alone may not lift his total to the same degree. Passing volume and scoring involvement should be assessed as related but distinct outputs.

What to watch

Check expected minutes and whether Díaz is repeatedly exchanging passes in advanced areas. Do not assume a higher pass count also means more shots: Stuttgart and Schalke moved in opposite directions.

PLAYER GOALS

David Mokwa: the scoring chances came from useful service, not a high shot volume

David Mokwa scored against Leverkusen and Mönchengladbach despite attempting only two shots and one shot respectively. The goals were supported by the opportunities themselves: an assisted chance worth roughly 0.42 expected goals against Leverkusen and a 0.29-xG fast break against Gladbach. These were more substantial openings than a raw low shot count might suggest, but they also left little margin if the single useful chance was not converted.

Bayern and Schalke showed the vulnerability of that limited supply. Mokwa played 73 minutes against Bayern but had only one modest assisted attempt, which missed; 76 minutes against Schalke produced no shot. The blanks were therefore not simply shorter cameos than the scoring games, where he played 75 and 88 minutes. For the next opponent, a scoring case needs a credible route to valuable service or transition space, not merely an expectation that Mokwa starts. Leverkusen and Gladbach demonstrate how one good opportunity can be enough, while Bayern and Schalke show how easily the goal prospect weakens when that opening never arrives. Repeating the conversion of every useful chance is less dependable than increasing their number.

What to watch

Look for Elversberg creating a substantial assisted or transition opportunity for Mokwa. Full or near-full minutes alone have not ensured a shot, so his expected service matters more than the recent scoring count.

PLAYER GOALS

Maurice Krattenmacher: the brief Gladbach scoring burst is not a dependable full-match rate

Maurice Krattenmacher scored twice in a 26-minute substitute appearance against Mönchengladbach. That spell included six attempts, a near-certain scoring opportunity and a valuable late fast break. It was a concentrated attacking phase, not evidence that every short appearance will contain the same supply or that the rate can be multiplied across ninety minutes. The chance events in that spell included both a shot hitting the post and a goal in the same minute, another reason to avoid treating every attempt as a separate sustained attack.

His other appearances were much quieter. Twenty-five minutes against Leverkusen produced one modest miss; 45 minutes against Bayern produced one difficult assisted finish; another 45 against Schalke produced no shot. More time therefore did not consistently mean more opportunities. For the next fixture, the first issue is his expected substitute or starting role, followed by whether the match is likely to offer the sort of valuable openings available against Gladbach. The Bayern goal shows that a difficult finish can still succeed, but it offers weaker repeatable support than a clear chance. The recent goals need to be read alongside highly variable minutes and opportunity supply.

What to watch

Do not extrapolate the Gladbach cameo into a standard scoring rate. Look for a credible role and access to valuable late chances; the two 45-minute appearances ranged from one difficult goal to no attempt.

PLAYER SHOTS ON TARGET

Igor Matanović: more shots on target have not necessarily meant better scoring chances

Igor Matanović put four of five attempts on target at Paderborn without scoring, but those shots together were worth only about 0.41 expected goals. At Frankfurt, both attempts reached the target yet totalled just 0.14 xG. These are useful examples of accurate shooting that did not necessarily create a strong goal expectation. The next opponent allowing similar modest assisted chances could support targets more convincingly than a goal.

Bremen produced the opposite efficiency: Matanović scored from his only target despite five attempts, with three other efforts blocked. Against Mönchengladbach he had two targets and two goals, but the chances differed sharply: a difficult early finish and a major opportunity in the 77th minute. That larger chance came after Gladbach’s 52nd-minute dismissal, so the numerical advantage belongs in the comparison. For the next match, target volume depends on getting attempts past defenders and onto the goalkeeper; goal potential additionally depends on their quality. Repeating the Gladbach return needs stronger openings than the Paderborn or Frankfurt targets alone establish.

What to watch

Separate accuracy from chance quality. Modest assisted attempts can still reach the target, while a strong goalscoring case needs better openings; the major Gladbach chance also came against ten players.

PLAYER SHOTS ON TARGET

Serhou Guirassy: Stuttgart’s blocks interrupted the target supply seen against Paderborn

Serhou Guirassy put all three attempts on target against Paderborn, with two assisted chances and a fast break all saved. Against Stuttgart, the same three-shot total produced no target: a corner attempt missed and two later efforts were blocked. The change therefore was not simply a loss of attempts. It was a shift in how cleanly he could finish them, with total chance value falling from about 0.63 to 0.16 expected goals.

Hoffenheim allowed five attempts and 1.18 xG but only two targets, because two efforts were blocked and a substantial assisted chance missed. Hamburg also produced two targets, though both came before Dortmund’s 77th-minute dismissal and carried only 0.13 xG combined. For the next opponent, multiple targets are better supported when Guirassy receives chances he can actually direct at the goalkeeper, as against Paderborn, rather than simply a larger shot forecast. Goal potential needs an additional quality judgment: Hamburg’s two targets were much less valuable than Hoffenheim’s broader opportunity supply. Expected minutes also matter after a 74-minute Stuttgart appearance, but they do not explain why all three shots failed to reach the target.

What to watch

Look for clear assisted shooting opportunities and fewer defensive blocks. Paderborn and Stuttgart had equal attempt counts but opposite target outcomes, while target count alone still did not determine goal quality.

OVER AND UNDER 2.5 TOTAL GOALS

Stuttgart match goals: the lower Dortmund total reflected a smaller chance environment

Stuttgart’s recorded Bundesliga matches contained six goals at Bayern, five against Köln, three at Hoffenheim and one against Dortmund. Combined xG was approximately 4.85, 6.26, 4.83 and 2.48. Unlike a sequence driven only by finishing, the Dortmund match did contain a meaningful reduction in overall opportunity. Both teams still created chances, but neither approached the attacking supply seen in the earlier higher-total fixtures.

The Köln match was the most chance-rich despite its 4–1 scoreline appearing one-sided. Köln generated 2.79 xG and missed a high-value opportunity, while Stuttgart generated 3.47. Köln’s goal was an own goal, so that event should be separated from their independent missed chances. Bayern’s five also included a Stuttgart own goal, although Bayern created 4.06 xG themselves. Hoffenheim and Stuttgart each exceeded two xG in their 2–1 meeting. For a future high total, the strongest support is a return to those substantial opportunities on one or both sides. If the next matchup resembles Dortmund’s more moderate chance supply, the earlier five- and six-goal scores should carry less weight.

What to watch

Judge whether the opponent allows and creates enough quality chances to restore the earlier two-sided environment. A lower-opportunity matchup can keep the total down even though Stuttgart’s recent history includes large scores.

BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE

Stuttgart: the Dortmund blank still contained more attacking threat than the Bayern goal

Both teams scored in Stuttgart’s recorded Bundesliga matches against Bayern, Köln and Hoffenheim, before the 0–1 loss to Dortmund. The blank did not mean Stuttgart created less than in every scoring game: they generated 1.15 xG and five targets against Dortmund, compared with 0.79 xG and four targets at Bayern. The outcome depended partly on finishing, so one scoreless result should not erase the underlying attempts.

The opposing goal also needs context. Köln’s only goal was a Stuttgart own goal, but Köln had generated 2.79 xG, including a saved corner chance and a missed high-value break. Their threat was therefore greater than the single goal might suggest. Hoffenheim generated 2.60 xG and scored twice on fast breaks, identifying a particular vulnerability when Stuttgart allow clear transition chances. Bayern’s 4.06 xG represents another substantial defensive test. For a future shared scoring result, Stuttgart’s own ability to create worthwhile openings has support, but it varies from match to match. The stronger case combines that threat with an opponent capable of exploiting the kinds of clear chances seen against Köln and Hoffenheim, rather than simply extrapolating the earlier scorelines.

What to watch

Assess whether Stuttgart can sustain clear attacking opportunities while limiting the opponent’s transition and restart chances. Their Dortmund blank and Köln own goal should be interpreted alongside the chances, not as complete descriptions of either attack.

CORNER HANDICAP AND WINNING MARGIN

Stuttgart corners: second-half production has overturned slow starts

Stuttgart had no first-half corners at Hoffenheim but took seven after the interval, turning a 0–1 corner deficit into a 7–5 final advantage. Against Dortmund, a 2–2 interval count became 6–2 as Stuttgart supplied every second-half corner. These recorded Bundesliga matches show why a quiet opening count does not necessarily describe Stuttgart’s full-match capacity, particularly when they can increase attacking pressure later.

The pattern is conditional rather than universal. Against Köln they maintained five corners in each half, while at Bayern their count fell from two to one as Bayern kept producing four after the break. At Hoffenheim, Stuttgart also created 1.58 second-half xG and 11 shots, so the corner surge accompanied a meaningful increase in opportunities. Against Dortmund, four second-half corners came with seven shots but no goal. A future late corner advantage therefore depends on Stuttgart being able to sustain attacks and on the opponent not matching their production. The need to find a goal may coexist with that pressure, but Bayern’s game shows that trailing alone is not enough.

What to watch

A slow Stuttgart corner start is more recoverable when their attacking access improves after half-time. Look for sustained pressure rather than assuming a deficit on the scoreboard will automatically produce a corner surge.
