PLAYER PASS ATTEMPTS

Keane Lewis-Potter’s Leeds passing high came from extra advanced involvement

Keane Lewis-Potter attempted 49 passes in 88 minutes at Leeds, compared with 33 in 90 minutes against Tottenham. His own-half work barely changed, 17 passes versus 16, while his opposition-half total nearly doubled from 17 to 32. The extra workload came from repeated involvement farther forward, not more time or a deeper role. Brentford’s larger passing pool at Leeds supported that access, but Lewis-Potter’s own share also mattered.

Sunderland produced more touches than Tottenham, 61 versus 53, yet only 28 passes. He took three shots and created three chances, showing that a busy attacking appearance can involve fewer repeated passing exchanges. Bournemouth’s 21 came in 60 minutes and needs a separate time allowance; Chelsea’s 29 came in 81. For another Leeds-sized total, the convincing condition is sustained advanced circulation through Lewis-Potter over most of the match. More touches or a promising attacking role alone does not show that those actions will become passes.

What to watch

Repeated advanced combinations across a substantial appearance support the higher range. A role ending possessions in shots or other actions can keep passing modest despite plenty of touches.

PLAYER PASS ATTEMPTS

Diego Gómez’s pass count has held up even when Brighton’s possession shrank

Diego Gómez attempted 31 passes against Arsenal with Brighton holding only 40% possession, compared with 29 at Chelsea when Brighton had 74%. His Arsenal involvement was more concentrated in the opposition half, with 27 passes there versus 22 at Chelsea, despite four fewer minutes. Brighton’s smaller team passing pool did not prevent Gómez receiving a larger share of useful attacking involvement.

Across Leeds, Chelsea and Arsenal, his totals stayed between 29 and 31 while Brighton’s team passes ranged from 343 to 647. Chelsea also brought five Gómez shots, whereas Arsenal brought none, so lower shooting involvement did not mean he was less active in passing. Villa’s 33 and Coventry’s 27 both came with Brighton gaining an extra player during the match, yet neither created a dramatic new passing level. The future condition is Gómez’s role within the possession, not a simple forecast that Brighton will dominate it. A lower-possession matchup can preserve his count if he remains involved in advanced combinations; a large team total can circulate around him.

What to watch

Gómez retaining repeated advanced involvement matters more than Brighton’s possession percentage alone. Do not automatically lift his passing expectation for a dominant matchup when the extra circulation may go elsewhere.

PLAYER PASS ATTEMPTS

Fatawu’s extra touches have not consistently become extra passes for Ipswich

Abdul Fatawu Issahaku attempted 15 passes in 83 minutes at United and the same 15 in 79 minutes against Liverpool. Ipswich’s team passing rose from 359 to 427, yet his advanced passing fell from ten to seven, with deeper work making up the difference. Extra team possession therefore did not expand his role in the attacking combinations. His 38 and 40 touches also greatly exceeded his pass totals, consistent with a player whose involvement often ends in actions other than another pass.

Palace produced his larger total, 19, in only 62 minutes, with 15 beyond halfway and 47 touches. That comparison needs its context: Palace lost Disasi in the 34th minute, giving Fatawu part of his appearance against ten men. At Everton, his 14 passes ended with his own 67th-minute dismissal. A high Fatawu count needs more than additional Ipswich circulation or a full-match assumption; it requires repeated advanced involvement and enough minutes to use it. The Palace ceiling is useful evidence of that involvement, but cannot be treated as an ordinary equal-numbers baseline.

What to watch

Repeated advanced touches that lead to passes offer the stronger route upward. Qualify the Palace example for the opposing red card and establish Fatawu’s selection and expected minutes before applying it.

PLAYER PASS ATTEMPTS

Iliman Ndiaye’s share of City’s possession matters more than the size of the team total

Iliman Ndiaye attempted 33 passes in 75 minutes against Sunderland, compared with 27 in 87 minutes against Coventry. City made 475 team passes against Sunderland and 819 against Coventry. Ndiaye’s larger personal total therefore came in fewer minutes with a much smaller passing pool, because more of the available play involved him. His passes increased in both areas, from eight to ten in his own half and from 19 to 23 beyond halfway.

The derby’s 14 passes came in only 45 minutes, with City reduced to ten men after Foden’s 23rd-minute dismissal. It should not be blended uncritically with the longer, equal-numbers appearances. Even Coventry’s 78% possession could not force a high Ndiaye count when his share remained small. For a future higher total, the relevant question is whether City use him repeatedly as a connection within attacks, as against Sunderland, rather than simply whether they will have the ball. The limited set of recorded appearances supports that conditional distinction, not a settled universal passing baseline.

What to watch

A larger personal role in City’s combinations can lift Ndiaye’s count without dominant possession. Treat shortened or red-card-affected appearances separately and establish his expected minutes.

PLAYER PASS ATTEMPTS

Maxim De Cuyper’s passing falls when Brighton lose advanced access, even over 90 minutes

Maxim De Cuyper attempted 46 passes at Chelsea and 24 against Arsenal, playing the full match in both. His own-half passing was almost unchanged, nine and eight, but his opposition-half count fell from 37 to 16. Brighton’s possession dropped from 74% to 40%, and De Cuyper’s advanced role shrank with it. Unlike a player whose deeper work compensates, he did not pick up enough additional buildup passing to protect the total.

Coventry’s 53 was a higher ceiling with a qualification: Brighton gained an extra player in the 53rd minute. De Cuyper’s advanced passing was almost the same as at Chelsea, 36 versus 37, but 17 own-half passes rather than nine lifted the total. Villa’s 41 and Leeds’ 29 also came in shorter appearances of 78 and 77 minutes. For another high count, a full appearance is only one condition. Brighton must keep him involved beyond halfway, with any deeper exchanges adding to that workload rather than merely replacing lost attacking access.

What to watch

Sustained advanced possession through De Cuyper supports the higher range. If Brighton are pushed back and his deeper work does not increase, 90 minutes alone will not preserve the count.

PLAYER PASS ATTEMPTS

Ross Barkley: the 102-pass Hull match required a very different Villa game

Ross Barkley’s 102 passes against Hull were built on both a full 90 minutes and unusually sustained involvement in the opposition half. Aston Villa attempted 683 passes with 73% possession, and 76 of Barkley’s passes came in Hull’s half. Against Forest, he managed 30 passes in 63 minutes, split evenly between the two halves of the pitch. More playing time would help that Forest total, but it would not by itself reproduce the concentration of advanced exchanges behind the Hull figure.

The remaining appearances reinforce how conditional that ceiling is. Barkley attempted 37 passes in 78 minutes against Arsenal, with 22 in the opposition half; against Tottenham he played only 15 minutes and attempted eight. His 25 against Brighton also came in a match where Villa were reduced to ten men after 40 minutes, which limits its usefulness as a normal-possession comparison. Hull is therefore evidence of what Barkley can accumulate when Villa hold the ball around him for a full match, rather than an everyday expectation. It also did not imply a breakthrough in front of goal: Villa drew 0–0. Repeated circulation can be productive for his passing count while producing a very different outcome for team scoring.

What to watch

The Hull-type ceiling needs a long appearance and sustained Villa possession in the opposition half involving Barkley. A shorter role or exchanges concentrated deeper in Villa’s half removes a large part of that route to volume.

PLAYER PASS ATTEMPTS

Luke Shaw’s higher passing count needs sustained work beyond halfway

Luke Shaw attempted 60 passes at Hull and 43 at Everton, with 90 and 89 minutes respectively. His own-half totals were almost identical, 18 and 19. The difference came farther forward: 42 opposition-half passes at Hull versus 24 at Everton. United’s 72% possession at Hull allowed repeated attacking circulation while chasing a two-goal deficit, and Shaw’s four chances created reflected that advanced involvement.

Ipswich’s 45 passes came in only 73 minutes, with more deep work and just 21 passes beyond halfway; that shorter appearance should not be read as weaker passing activity on the same time basis. Fulham brought 49 in 84 minutes, with 27 advanced passes, still well below Hull’s advanced workload. A large United team passing total helps only if Shaw receives a meaningful part of the attacking circulation. His recorded appearances also do not cover every team game, so the next selection and expected minutes matter. For a Hull-like count, the useful condition is sustained advanced involvement, not merely his normal deeper passing.

What to watch

A substantial appearance with repeated opposition-half exchanges supports Shaw’s higher range. Deep circulation alone has not reproduced the Hull total.

PLAYER PASS ATTEMPTS

Olivier Boscagli’s passing needs both Brighton circulation and a sizeable personal share

Olivier Boscagli attempted 82 passes at Chelsea but 66 against Villa, although Brighton made exactly 647 team passes in each and he played 90 minutes. Against Chelsea, Brighton involved him more in both areas: 34 own-half and 48 opposition-half passes, compared with 23 and 43 against Villa. The extra-player advantage Brighton held after Villa’s 40th-minute dismissal did not automatically make that the larger personal workload.

Arsenal reduced both the team pool and Boscagli’s share. Brighton made 343 passes and he supplied only 25, split 12 in his own half and 13 beyond halfway. Leeds brought 59 in 89 minutes and five chances created, showing that a more creative outing need not match Chelsea’s repeated circulation. Coventry’s 53 came in 78 minutes and partly against ten men, so it also needs a time and game-state adjustment. For another high count, Brighton need enough sustained possession and a reason to keep using Boscagli within it. Dominance that flows through another defender or midfielder can leave his total lower.

What to watch

A large team passing pool must be paired with frequent use of Boscagli. The identical Villa and Chelsea team totals show why possession forecasts alone cannot set his personal ceiling.

PLAYER PASS ATTEMPTS

Jeremie Frimpong’s short appearances cannot be treated as a normal passing baseline

Jeremie Frimpong attempted 43 passes in 90 minutes at Newcastle and 41 in only 71 minutes against Forest. His geography was almost identical: 15 own-half passes in each, with 28 and 26 beyond halfway. Forest therefore provided a faster accumulation of a similar workload, helped by Liverpool’s larger team circulation. The two-pass difference understates the change in how often he was involved while on the pitch.

Fulham’s 12 passes came in just 18 minutes and included two chances created. That is useful evidence of a brief attacking contribution, but neither the total nor a straight multiplication to 90 minutes establishes what a full appearance would produce. The available record contains only these three current-season appearances and does not establish why he missed other games or his next-match availability. For a higher total, the first condition is a substantial appearance; within that, repeated advanced involvement like the Forest game matters more than Liverpool’s possession figure alone. A short cameo can be productive without offering enough time to accumulate passes.

What to watch

Establish Frimpong’s selection and likely minutes first. A substantial spell with repeated advanced involvement supports a higher total; the Fulham cameo should not be projected mechanically across a full match.

PLAYER PASS ATTEMPTS

Youri Tielemans: Manchester United’s buildup workload can matter more than team possession

Youri Tielemans attempted 81 passes against Everton despite Manchester United making fewer team passes than against Ipswich, where he finished with 70. Both appearances lasted 90 minutes. His opposition-half passes barely changed, from 43 against Ipswich to 44 against Everton; own-half passes rose from 27 to 37. The extra total came predominantly from more buildup involvement, rather than a larger overall United passing pool or a surge of advanced exchanges.

Hull shows another route to a strong count. Tielemans attempted 73 passes in only 67 minutes, including 48 in the opposition half, while United made 669 passes with 72% possession. The same 67 minutes against City produced only 44, although City had been reduced to ten men after 23 minutes. Numerical advantage did not automatically reproduce the Hull passing environment or Tielemans’ personal workload. His 77 against Fulham included 53 opposition-half passes, showing that advanced involvement can again do more of the work in a longer appearance. These contrasts make a single possession-based expectation unreliable. A strong total can come through repeated buildup exchanges or sustained advanced involvement, but it needs United to keep routing the ball through him.

What to watch

Identify which passing workload Tielemans is likely to carry. The Everton example supports volume from deeper buildup; Hull and Fulham relied more on advanced exchanges. Extra possession or an opponent dismissal alone does not guarantee either.

PLAYER PASS ATTEMPTS

Dewsbury-Hall can replace lost advanced passes with deeper Everton involvement

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall attempted 37 passes against both Palace and Tottenham, but the totals came from very different work. Palace brought 33 passes beyond halfway and only four in his own half. At Spurs, the advanced count fell to 20 while own-half passes rose to 17. Almost the whole loss farther forward was replaced by deeper involvement, preserving the total despite Everton having less possession.

United’s 40 passes and Ipswich’s 44 combined a stronger advanced contribution with more deep work than against Palace. Ipswich also lost Fatawu in the 67th minute, so that higher total includes part of the match against ten men. Bournemouth brought only 32 despite four chances created, twice his United and Ipswich creative output. The future passing question is whether Dewsbury-Hall remains a regular connection when Everton’s attacking access changes. A deeper role can protect the count, but only if it adds enough exchanges to replace the advanced ones; chance creation alone does not measure that accumulation.

What to watch

Deeper involvement can cushion a drop in Everton’s advanced possession. A higher total needs that compensation or repeated advanced combinations, rather than simply more chances created.

James McAtee’s passing rises when Forest keep finding him beyond halfway

James McAtee attempted 48 passes in 82 minutes at Villa and 49 in 83 minutes against Coventry, despite Forest’s team passing rising from 358 to 508. His own contribution was almost unchanged: 28 passes beyond halfway in each, with 20 and 21 in his own half. The larger Coventry team total mostly did not become extra McAtee work. Villa already gave him a substantial share of the available possession.

Liverpool provides a low-possession counterexample: Forest held only 31% of the ball, but McAtee still attempted 39 passes in 89 minutes. Against Tottenham he played 90 and attempted only 30, despite creating five chances. Creativity was concentrated into fewer possessions rather than accompanied by repeated circulation. His advanced passing fell to 16 against Spurs, compared with 28 in the two higher games. For a higher McAtee count, recurring involvement beyond halfway is the useful condition, with enough deeper work to support it. Forest dominance is helpful only if the ball keeps returning through him.

What to watch

A Villa-like share of repeated advanced possession supports more McAtee passes. A few productive final actions can coexist with low accumulation, as the Tottenham game showed.

PLAYER PASS ATTEMPTS

Christos Tzolis needs both minutes and repeated combinations to reach his higher pass totals

Christos Tzolis attempted 44 passes against Chelsea, with 30 beyond halfway and four chances created. At Sunderland he made only 22 in 81 minutes, including 18 beyond halfway, despite Arsenal holding slightly more possession. That difference is too large to explain by nine fewer minutes alone: Arsenal involved him repeatedly in combinations against Chelsea, while the Sunderland match brought only 37 touches compared with 56. His pass total depends on personal access to the ball, not just Arsenal’s possession share.

Brighton also held Tzolis to 22, but through a different distribution: 12 own-half passes and ten in the opposition half. Sunderland’s same total contained only four in his own half, so deeper involvement replaced advanced work at Brighton without lifting the count. Villa’s ten passes came in a 45-minute appearance and should be separated from these longer outings. Coventry, by contrast, brought 36 in 76 minutes alongside four shots and three chances created. A higher Tzolis count needs a substantial spell on the pitch plus repeated involvement nearer the opposition goal; being busy deeper or playing in an Arsenal win does not establish the same role.

What to watch

Frequent advanced combinations and sufficient minutes support the higher range. A deeper touch distribution or a short appearance can keep the count low even when Arsenal have more of the ball.

PLAYER PASS ATTEMPTS

Antoine Semenyo’s two goals against Sunderland did not require a large passing workload

Antoine Semenyo scored twice against Sunderland while attempting 28 passes, his lowest total across the recorded full-match appearances. At Palace he attempted 44 without scoring. The Palace game repeatedly involved him in possession: 68 touches and 33 passes beyond halfway, compared with 51 touches and 20 advanced passes against Sunderland. Goals describe how he finished attacks; the passing count depends on how often he participates before those endings.

City’s possession alone does not settle that role. Coventry allowed City 78% possession and 819 team passes, yet Semenyo attempted only 33; Palace’s lower 72% and 788 still gave him 44. The derby’s 29 also came with City down to ten men from the 23rd minute and should not be treated as a normal attacking environment. For another high count, City need to keep involving Semenyo in repeated advanced exchanges rather than merely dominate the ball elsewhere. A matchup offering him good finishing opportunities can remain a modest passing game, as Sunderland demonstrated.

What to watch

A Palace-like share of repeated advanced possession supports more Semenyo passes. City dominance or a promising goalscoring matchup is insufficient if his involvement chiefly comes at the end of attacks.

OVER 1.5 TEAM GOALS

Ipswich’s second goal has often required a late chance or a changed game

Ipswich’s two against Sunderland began with Emersonn’s high-value fast break, but Maeda then missed a 0.61-xG chance and the winner did not arrive until Clarke’s difficult stoppage-time finish. At Manchester United, their second was also late, through Akpom’s 0.97-xG chance when the game was already heavily against them. Palace offered more evenly distributed scoring opportunities, with goals from chances worth roughly 0.36, 0.49 and 0.40 xG, but two came after Palace lost Disasi in the 34th minute. The multiple-goal returns have credible chance support, yet their timing and match conditions differ materially.

Liverpool restricted Ipswich to 0.73 xG despite five recorded targets: getting an effort on goal did not mean it was a strong scoring chance. Everton allowed more danger, 1.44 xG, including Davis’s missed 0.42-xG opportunity, but Ipswich failed to score and lost Fatawu in the 67th minute. For another brace, the useful evidence is repeated access to valuable chances while enough time and attacking personnel remain. A late consolation at United or goals against ten-man Palace should not become a blanket expectation that Ipswich will reach two in an ordinary, level game.

What to watch

Several substantial chances across the match support a second Ipswich goal. Adjust for dismissals and timing: a late consolation or an extra-player advantage does not establish a routine two-goal baseline.

OVER AND UNDER 9.5 TOTAL CORNERS

Bournemouth’s corner totals depend on how attacks end, not how many shots they take

Bournemouth took 20 shots against Brentford but only two corners, with Brentford adding one. Ten Bournemouth attempts reached the target and only two were blocked, so much of the activity ended in shots getting through rather than repeated defensive interruptions. Against Everton, Bournemouth took fewer shots, 17, but seven were blocked and they won ten corners. Six of those blocks and seven corners came after halftime, with Everton still adding three corners of their own. That sustained second-half supply produced a 17-corner match rather than the three against Brentford.

Newcastle is the limit on a simple blocked-shot explanation: Bournemouth again had seven attempts blocked but collected only three corners, and the total stopped at seven. The 11 at City instead depended on City supplying eight, with Bournemouth contributing three. Liverpool supplied just three alongside Bournemouth’s three, despite the teams making 156 combined final-third entries. Last season’s home Brentford game also stayed below ten, at seven, although the current match had more goals and much more accurate Bournemouth shooting. For another high total, identify a side capable of repeatedly producing corners and enough support from the other team; shot volume, blocks and territorial entries are clues, not corner counts in disguise.

What to watch

Everton-style repeated second-half corners support a high total, while clean shots reaching goal can leave an active game low. If Bournemouth contribute only two or three, the opponent must carry most of the count.

OVER AND UNDER 9.5 TOTAL CORNERS

Nottingham Forest’s early corners have often failed to carry through the full match

Tottenham’s ten corners were enough to take their game at Nottingham Forest to 12, despite Forest supplying only two and neither team scoring. Spurs maintained five corners in each half. The other promising starts did not persist: Forest–Liverpool had six before halftime but only two afterwards, while Villa–Forest moved from five to seven. At Liverpool, the home side had 75% second-half possession, 53 final-third entries and nine shots, yet earned just one corner. At Villa, Forest took 17 second-half shots but only three were blocked and they collected one corner. Pressure and shooting increased without the same increase in corner endings.

Coventry shows how a late push can also fall short. Forest’s second-half possession reached 72%, Coventry made 27 clearances and Forest took five corners, but the slow two-corner opening left the final total at eight. Last season’s home Spurs match had only six corners, shared 3–3, compared with Spurs carrying ten this time. For a future ten-corner game, the strongest evidence is sustained production across both halves or an opponent able to carry the count as Spurs did. A high halftime number alone is vulnerable when attacks later end in shots, goals or possession changes without more corners.

What to watch

A side maintaining its corner supply after halftime is essential when Forest contribute little. Liverpool- or Villa-style fading corner production can leave even an active second half below ten.

OVER 1.5 TEAM GOALS

Everton’s two-goal games have needed finishing their stronger chance-creation games lacked

Everton’s 2–0 win over Palace combined a difficult Dewsbury-Hall finish, worth about 0.04 xG, with Barry’s more substantial 0.41-xG set-piece goal. Against United, both Everton goals came from attempts worth less than 0.04 xG, late in the game. The successful two-goal returns therefore included finishing that was much better than the underlying opportunities would ordinarily suggest. They are not evidence that Everton routinely create two goals’ worth of clear chances against those opponents.

The missed opportunities elsewhere offer a more useful route forward. Barry had chances worth 0.82 and 0.54 xG saved at Bournemouth, where Everton scored only once. Against Ipswich, Everton produced 2.24 xG but put only two of 21 shots on target; Brennan Johnson missed a 0.60-xG chance. Ipswich also lost Fatawu to a second yellow in the 67th minute, so Everton’s failure to add a second persisted even with an extra player. Last season’s home Palace game also yielded two Everton goals, but from 2.03 xG rather than this season’s 1.12. To support another brace, look for the Bournemouth-style supply of valuable chances or Ipswich-style access with better execution. Repeating the United result without improving chance quality would require another unusually productive pair of finishes.

What to watch

More accurate execution of repeated close-range opportunities is the credible route to two Everton goals. A match producing only difficult chances leaves much greater dependence on exceptional finishing.

CORNER HANDICAP AND WINNING MARGIN

Brighton’s corner margin can reverse while their scoring advantage grows

Brighton beat Coventry 5–0 but lost corners 3–5. Coventry lost Awoniyi in the 53rd minute, already 2–0 down. Brighton’s four second-half goals came with no corners: only one of their ten attempts in that half was blocked, and five reached the target. Arsenal offers another separation between goals and corners. Brighton led 2–0 at halftime, then conceded six second-half corners as Arsenal increased possession to 65% and Brighton made 16 clearances. The final score was 3–0, but the corner result was a 5–6 defeat. A comfortable lead did not protect Brighton’s corner margin.

Their clearer corner wins came in different territorial conditions. Villa managed only 25 final-third entries to Brighton’s 71, and Brighton won corners 5–2. Villa played with ten men from the 40th minute, an important condition behind the sustained territorial imbalance. At Chelsea, Brighton made 81 entries to 43, forced 38 Chelsea clearances and won corners 7–4 despite losing 4–3. Leeds’ second-half resistance produced 28 clearances and six blocked Brighton shots as Brighton reversed a 2–4 halftime corner deficit to win 7–6. The stronger margin case is sustained territorial pressure that keeps ending in defensive interruptions, combined with limited opposing corner supply. Brighton finishing attacks efficiently or defending a lead can instead leave the margin much narrower than the score suggests.

What to watch

Territorial pressure that persists and keeps the opponent clearing offers better support for a Brighton corner margin than goals. A lead accompanied by an opposing second-half push can reverse the corner balance.

OVER AND UNDER 2.5 TOTAL GOALS

Brentford can carry a high goal total through set pieces and breaks, but Bournemouth needed exceptional finishing

Brentford’s three goals against Chelsea came from valuable situations: Anthony’s corner chance was worth 0.96 xG, Thiago’s fast-break finish 0.60 and Carvalho’s throw-in set-piece chance 0.43. Chelsea contributed no goals and just 0.83 xG, so Brentford carried the total through specific attacking routes rather than a two-sided shootout. Tottenham was another self-carried total, with 3.87 Brentford xG and three goals despite Thiago missing a penalty. The 2–2 at Bournemouth was much less repeatable from Brentford’s side: Schade converted their only two shots on target from chances worth about 0.17 and 0.03 xG.

Leeds and Sunderland show why the lower totals are not all restrictive games. Both finished 1–1 despite more than three combined xG. Thiago missed a 0.50-xG chance at Leeds, while Sunderland’s equaliser came from a penalty after both teams had created other opportunities. Last season’s home Chelsea game reached four goals with both sides contributing, whereas the current three-goal result relied entirely on Brentford. Another high total is better supported by repeated access to valuable set-piece and transition chances than by extrapolating Schade’s two finishes from a half-xG team performance.

What to watch

Clear chances from restarts and breaks give Brentford a route to carry three goals without much opponent help. If that supply is missing, Bournemouth’s efficient finishing is a weak substitute.

CORNER HANDICAP AND WINNING MARGIN

Tottenham’s large corner margins come from restricting the opponent’s box access

Tottenham’s 10–2 corner win at Nottingham Forest and 11–1 against Aston Villa shared more than heavy Spurs possession: the opposition reached only 10 and 19 penalty-area touches respectively, while Tottenham reached 30 and 31. Forest produced no second-half corner; Villa also produced none after halftime. That suppression allowed Spurs’ own repeated attacks to become large margins. The match results were a draw and a defeat, showing why a corner advantage should be assessed separately from the score.

Newcastle’s visit illustrates a narrower margin. Spurs won 9–7, but Newcastle kept enough of its own corner contribution to prevent Tottenham’s nine becoming a wide spread. Last season’s same home fixture had ended 2–12 on corners, with Newcastle reaching 53 penalty-area touches; that fell to 21 in the current meeting while Spurs’ touches rose from 29 to 33. The change in opposing access was much larger than the change in Tottenham’s own box presence. Everton is the limit to this explanation: Spurs had 37 box touches to Everton’s 19 yet lost corners 5–6. Eight Tottenham shots were blocked, but blocks do not automatically become corners. Spurs won three of the five current counts. The clearest support for another wide margin is both a strong Tottenham corner contribution and an opponent whose corner production is being suppressed; possession, box touches or blocked-shot totals alone cannot establish that margin.

What to watch

A Newcastle-like opponent still adding several corners narrows the spread even if Spurs dominate the count. Forest- or Villa-like suppression at the other end supports a wider margin, but Everton shows why territorial dominance alone is insufficient.
