MLS Analysis

Austin scored three against San Diego from about 1.26 xG, with all three goals arriving after they fell 0–3 behind. Their second half contained six shots and 0.79 xG, so the comeback depended on converting a substantial share of the opportunities available. At Vancouver they scored twice from four shots and 1.05 xG, again turning a small attacking workload into an efficient result.

The goalless Dallas match supplies the opposite warning: Austin held 55% possession but created only 0.26 xG from eight shots. More of the ball did not give them worthwhile scoring positions. For the next opponent, expecting two goals needs evidence that Austin can access useful chances, not merely repeat the San Diego finishing rate. The Vancouver performance included a good fast-break opening, showing one viable route, but an opponent that prevents those openings could leave the attack closer to the Dallas supply. A recent high score does not remove that dependence on opportunity quality.

Austin beat Vancouver 2–1 without taking a corner, while Vancouver took six. Austin scored from both targets and only four shots, so their success did not require repeated attacking pressure. Their 2–1 win at Portland also came with a corner deficit, 3–6. These are poor precedents for assuming that a positive goal matchup will produce corner superiority.

The 1–1 with Colorado offers a different route: Austin took eight corners to Colorado’s four while chasing a first-half deficit. Against San Diego, Austin led corners 4–0 at halftime but added none after the break, even as the score developed into a 3–3 draw. For the next fixture, assess whether Austin are likely to sustain attacks that force corners rather than finish a few isolated chances efficiently. A close game can provide that workload, but the San Diego example shows that even a busy scoring half need not continue the earlier corner pace.

Atlanta’s two recent recorded clean sheets came through very different defensive performances. DC United managed four shots, no target and about 0.21 xG in a goalless draw. Portland created 2.30 xG in Atlanta’s 1–0 win, including several useful missed or saved chances. The Portland result therefore survived much more danger; it is weaker evidence that Atlanta can keep another active opponent quiet.

Atlanta’s own scoring also needs context. Both goals in the 2–3 loss to Orlando were own goals, while the 2–2 at Miami included an Atlanta penalty goal and another penalty saved. The 2–2 with NYCFC came from only 0.95 Atlanta xG, although one corner chance was valuable. For the next match, a shared-scoring case needs actual Atlanta chance creation as well as opposing threat. A pair of team goals can overstate how often Atlanta’s attackers converted their own chances, and a clean sheet can conceal the opponent’s missed opportunities. Assess those two sides separately rather than extending the score sequence.

Atlanta scored twice against Orlando without an Atlanta player converting a shot: both goals were recorded as own goals. Their 2–2 at Miami had much more own opportunity, about 3.00 xG, but two penalties supplied a large share, with one scored and one saved. Those results should not be treated as equivalent evidence of a steady open-play route to multiple goals.

The NYCFC draw added two goals from 0.95 xG, including a useful corner chance worth roughly 0.65. By contrast, 19 shots and 1.42 xG at DC United produced no goal, with only three attempts reaching the target. For the next opponent, the stronger two-goal case needs Atlanta to create and accurately finish several useful openings rather than rely on an own goal or penalty to complete the score. Their recent team totals show that two goals can arrive through exceptional events; the DC blank shows that volume without accuracy can leave the attack short even against a very quiet opponent.

Atlanta lost 0–2 to Charlotte but won corners 11–7, taking 18 shots while trying to recover. Their 1–0 win at Portland produced the opposite corner result, a 3–5 defeat, as Portland took 13 second-half shots while chasing Atlanta’s lead. The goal result therefore says little by itself about which side will keep generating corner pressure.

Against DC United, Atlanta held 70% possession and won corners 8–4, with six of their corners arriving after halftime in a match that stayed goalless. That unresolved score preserved a reason to keep attacking, but the margin was still more modest than the sheer possession share might suggest. For the next fixture, the stronger Atlanta corner case requires sustained attacking work and a limited opposing response. If Atlanta score early and the opponent becomes the side pushing for an equaliser, their goal outlook can improve while their corner advantage shrinks. A favourable win expectation should not replace that match-state assessment.
