Liga MX Analysis

Tigres lost 0–2 at Juárez but won corners 9–2, with seven taken before halftime. Their pressure was already producing corners while the score was level, so the advantage was not solely a reaction to conceding. At Atlas they lost 1–2 but won corners 16–2, taking nine before the break and seven afterwards. Atlas’s 70th-minute dismissal affected the later contest, but much of Tigres’s corner dominance was established before it.

The Monterrey derby was very different: Tigres took no corners, only five shots and generated 0.14 xG while Monterrey took six corners. This is the matchup distinction that matters next. Tigres’s poor goal return does not prevent a strong corner advantage when they can keep the opponent defending, but it also does not mean such pressure will exist against every side. A favourable margin needs evidence of access to sustained attacks; the nine and 16 against Juárez and Atlas are not a baseline to carry into a game where their attacking involvement is severely reduced.

Tigres supplied 16 of the 18 corners at Atlas and 11 of the 17 at Querétaro. Against Santos, they supplied only three of 15, with Santos taking 12. A high combined total therefore does not require Tigres to dominate the count; it requires at least one attack to sustain enough corner-producing pressure. The opponent can completely reverse which side carries that burden.

The Necaxa draw shows why a busy goal contest is not sufficient. It contained 38 shots and about 5.13 combined xG but only nine corners, split six to three. The Atlante win had six corners despite Tigres enjoying a long numerical advantage, and the derby had six with Tigres contributing none. For the next fixture, identify who is likely to produce repeated corners and whether the other team can add a meaningful share. A large Tigres shot count, favourable goal outlook or possession advantage does not independently guarantee that the combined count reaches ten.

The 3–2 win at Toluca contained about 5.31 combined xG; the 2–3 loss at Puebla contained only 1.39. Puebla’s match included an own goal benefiting Santos and four other finishes worth less than 0.12 xG each. Toluca’s match had valuable opportunities at both ends, although Santos’s late turnaround still depended on difficult finishes and playing against ten men. The identical five-goal total therefore gives very different evidence about future scoring potential.

The 2–1 win over Juárez also carried substantial opportunity, about 4.94 combined xG, despite producing fewer goals. Each side had a penalty, with Santos’s saved, so part of that total again came from exceptional events. For the next opponent, look for useful chances from both attacks outside those events. A high-total case based on ongoing creation is stronger than one built on the Puebla finishing rate. If Santos return to the limited supply seen at Cruz Azul, the opposition would need to carry much more of the total.

Santos and Juárez reached halftime at 0–0 despite about 1.93 combined xG and eight targets. Both attacks had already created chances, so the empty score did not describe an inactive match. Against Guadalajara, the same halftime score contained only about 0.35 combined xG. Expecting the same later goal potential from those two openings would ignore a large difference in what had actually happened near goal.

The Juárez game continued to create opportunities after the break, but penalties for both teams contributed heavily to the chance total and only Juárez converted theirs. Guadalajara’s second-half improvement also included a penalty, which became the only goal. For the next fixture, a goalless opening should prompt a check on the number and quality of chances already being created, then whether that supply is likely to persist. It should not automatically be treated as a quiet game, or as a guarantee that goals are merely delayed. A slow match needs a genuine change in attacking conditions to become more dangerous.
