La Liga Analizi

Both teams scored in all seven recorded Rayo Vallecano league matches, but the sequence does not mean every game offered the same balance of danger. Rayo’s 1–1 with Alavés came from just 0.42 xG, against 2.00 for the visitors. At Osasuna, Rayo took 19 shots but put only two on target, creating 1.01 xG in another 1–1. Scoring survived both a low-volume game and a wasteful high-volume game; neither establishes that Rayo will always supply a goal.

The opposition’s goals also came through different mechanisms. Sevilla’s two were penalties, while Barcelona’s five included a Florian Lejeune own goal. Against Espanyol, Rayo led 2–0 at half-time before conceding amid a second-half shift: Espanyol took 14 shots to Rayo’s five, and Rayo recorded no further targets. That is a more specific pattern to assess in a future match than the universal scoring streak. If Rayo establish a lead but their attacking involvement falls away, the opponent may gain enough pressure to answer. Conversely, a match in which Rayo again create only a handful of modest chances leaves their own goal dependent on efficient finishing. Both sides’ chance routes still need checking, even with an unbroken sequence.

Rayo Vallecano earned nine corners against both Alavés and Racing, winning those counts 9–7 and 9–6. Neither advantage required a clear lead in possession: Rayo finished on 48% and 49%. Against Alavés, the nine corners accompanied only eight shots and 0.42 xG, which makes them evidence of restart production rather than superior chance quality. Against Racing, six second-half corners helped preserve the advantage even as Rayo’s possession fell to 36% in that half.

The tougher comparison came against Barcelona and Real Madrid. Rayo took five corners in each match, a respectable contribution, but their opponents took nine and 11. The issue was therefore not simply Rayo failing to attack; the other side supplied too many restarts for five to be enough. Espanyol offers a related game-state example: Rayo led 2–0 at half-time, then took only one second-half corner as Espanyol increased its pressure and won the overall count 5–3. At Osasuna, Rayo’s four first-half corners were followed by none after the break, leaving a 4–4 tie. For the next fixture, a strong Rayo total needs to be considered alongside the opponent’s ability to keep producing corners, especially after the score changes.

The seven goals at Alavés should not be treated as a normal Osasuna match total. Alavés scored five from 1.20 xG and seven shots on target, while Osasuna’s two goals included a penalty. The 5–2 score therefore depended on exceptionally productive finishing from the hosts. Atlético Madrid’s 4–0 win had a much stronger chance-volume basis: 26 attempts, 11 targets and 3.97 xG against Osasuna’s three attempts and 0.48 xG. Both were heavy defeats, but only the latter showed an opponent repeatedly creating enough danger to carry a high total largely by itself.

The 2–1 at Celta offers a third mechanism, with Osasuna’s comeback and 2.51 second-half xG following a Celta dismissal. Without those conditions, the sample also contains a 0–0 with Levante, a 1–0 against Getafe, a 0–2 against Espanyol and a 1–1 with Rayo. Those lower totals do not guarantee another quiet match, but they make it important to identify what would increase the chance supply. A powerful opponent dominating Osasuna’s penalty area is a firmer basis than expecting Alavés-level conversion to repeat; an Osasuna scoring improvement would also need more than possession or a recent goal.

Osasuna scored twice at Celta and Alavés, with Ante Budimir converting a penalty in each. Those are their only multiple-goal returns in the seven recorded La Liga matches. At Celta, the other goal followed a major change in the match: Marcos Alonso was dismissed in the 51st minute with Celta leading, Kike Barja equalised three minutes later, and Osasuna generated 2.51 xG after half-time. That is a convincing chance-creation phase, but it occurred against ten men rather than under the conditions present at kick-off.

At Alavés, Osasuna created 1.64 xG, including the penalty, and Budimir scored their other goal just after half-time. The remaining matches ranged from 0.48 to 1.68 xG, with no more than one Osasuna goal. The upper end came against Getafe, where another Budimir penalty supplied the only score and a Jonathan Dubasin chance was saved. This leaves a practical distinction for the next fixture: a second goal becomes more credible when Osasuna create several valuable chances without relying on a penalty or a dismissal to change the game. More possession alone is weak support; they held 61% against Espanyol but produced 0.87 xG and failed to score.

Osasuna conceded five at Alavés and four at Atlético Madrid, but only the Alavés match brought a goal at both ends. The difference was Osasuna’s attack: seven attempts, five targets and 1.64 xG at Alavés compared with three attempts, one target and 0.48 xG at Atlético. A dangerous opponent can therefore push up the risk of conceding without leaving Osasuna enough attacking involvement to answer. Atlético restricted them to one second-half shot while adding three goals of its own.

Even Osasuna’s scoring games need context. Ante Budimir converted penalties against Celta, Getafe and Alavés, and the Celta comeback followed Marcos Alonso’s dismissal with Celta leading 1–0. The 1–1 against Rayo was different again: Osasuna scored from 0.53 xG, while Rayo’s 19 attempts produced only two targets and 1.01 xG. That draw was not a match of repeated clear openings for both sides. For the next fixture, focus on whether Osasuna can sustain chances alongside the opponent’s threat. Their defensive concessions alone are a weak reason to expect them to score, particularly against a side that can monopolise the game as Atlético did.

Osasuna earned nine corners in the goalless draw with Levante, six before half-time. That sustained restart supply did not translate into a goal: seven shots reached the target, but the team generated only 0.70 xG. The corner count therefore described repeated attacks more clearly than it described dangerous finishing opportunities. In the other six recorded La Liga matches, Osasuna took three, one, one, three, zero and four corners, with no outright corner advantage.

The contrast with Celta is especially revealing. Osasuna won 2–1 after Celta went down to ten, producing 2.51 second-half xG, yet still lost the corner count 3–5. At Getafe, a penalty helped secure a 1–0 win with only one Osasuna corner. Goals and even clear chances can consequently arrive without the repeated restarts seen against Levante. At Atlético Madrid, meanwhile, Osasuna had no corners and only three shots against 26, a much clearer case of territorial suppression. For the next opponent, the Levante total needs evidence of sustained restart production rather than support from Osasuna’s ability to score or win. A low opponent count can make the comparison closer, but it has not usually created an Osasuna lead in this sample.

Málaga never scored more than once in the seven recorded La Liga matches. That puts much of the burden for a high match total on the opposition. Villarreal supplied a convincing example, creating 3.33 xG and seven shots on target in a 3–1 win, while Málaga managed one target and 0.63 xG. Real Madrid’s 4–0 win was less straightforward: Madrid generated 2.40 xG, and the score included a Málaga own goal. Four conceded therefore overstated the volume of ordinary finishing chances compared with the Villarreal match.

The lower totals also deserve different interpretations. Atlético Madrid’s 2–0 win contained only 1.07 combined xG, with Málaga contributing 0.15. In contrast, the 0–0 against Levante contained 2.57 combined xG and a saved Málaga penalty. The 1–1 with Deportivo reached 3.07 combined xG, including a Málaga penalty goal and a later high-value effort against the post. Those matches show why a run of low scores cannot by itself establish a low-chance environment. The next opponent’s chance creation is the key distinction: repeated dangerous opportunities can carry the total even with a limited Málaga attack, whereas a modest chance supply leaves a high score dependent on exceptional finishing or decisive incidents.
