La Liga Analizi

Sevilla scored the opening goal against Athletic, Espanyol, Valencia, Deportivo and Barcelona, but the timing and conditions differed sharply. At Espanyol the breakthrough did not arrive until the 85th minute, and against Valencia it came in the 81st. Both matches were goalless at half-time after Sevilla had failed to put a shot on target. Being first to score in those games reflected the opponent also remaining scoreless, rather than a forceful early Sevilla attack.

At Athletic, Sevilla’s 15th-minute opener followed Yuri Berchiche’s dismissal four minutes earlier. Against Barcelona, Youssouf Fofana scored in the 19th minute, but Barcelona equalised three minutes later and eventually won 3–1. Deportivo offered another route: Sevilla scored in the 52nd minute against an opponent that generated only 0.14 xG across the match, with Deportivo’s dismissal occurring afterwards. Rayo and Atlético instead struck against Sevilla in the fourth minute. For the next fixture, distinguish an early attacking advantage from the possibility of eventually breaking a quiet deadlock. Sevilla’s opening-goal record is most useful when paired with the opponent’s early threat and the actual opportunities Sevilla create, rather than taken as evidence of uniformly fast starts.

Sevilla’s 1–0 wins over Valencia and Deportivo were supported by unusually limited opposition chances: Valencia took three shots, none on target, for 0.08 xG; Deportivo took four for 0.14 xG. Deportivo’s three targets underline why accuracy alone is not enough—the chances reaching goal were still low-value. Those clean sheets have a stronger defensive basis than simply relying on opponents to miss several clear opportunities, although Deportivo also played with ten men after the 59th minute.

The other recorded league matches all brought goals at both ends, but Sevilla’s own scoring was sometimes fragile. Two penalties supplied both goals against Rayo; the opener at Espanyol arrived from a throw-in set piece after Sevilla had been reduced to ten; and their goal against Barcelona came within only 0.40 xG. Barcelona then generated 2.94 second-half xG while Sevilla created 0.08. For the next fixture, assess both parts separately: can Sevilla limit the opponent to the low-quality attempts seen against Valencia, and can their own attack create enough without needing a decisive penalty or restart? A recent scoring sequence does not remove either condition, especially against a side capable of taking over the second half.

Sevilla’s match at Athletic reached 13 corners, but Athletic supplied ten despite playing with ten men from the 11th minute. Eight of those corners came after half-time while Athletic were trailing. Sevilla contributed only three and none in the second half, so the high total was driven by the opponent’s sustained chase rather than shared corner production. The 1–0 win over Valencia reached ten by a different route, with Sevilla taking six and Valencia four.

The other recorded La Liga matches finished with three, six, four, eight and four combined corners. Against Rayo, Sevilla scored twice from penalties in a game with only three corners. Against Barcelona, 24 Barcelona shots and 3.47 xG produced only three Barcelona corners, with Sevilla adding one. Those examples show why goals and dangerous attacks cannot substitute for evidence of restarts. For the next fixture, a high corner total needs either a much stronger Sevilla contribution, as against Valencia, or an opponent capable of accumulating repeated corners while chasing, as Athletic did. Simply expecting an open match or a powerful opposing attack does not establish either route.

Real Sociedad’s 3–2 win at Valencia contained 4.20 combined xG, making it a substantially more chance-rich match than the 3–2 at Elche, which contained 3.05. The distribution also differed: Sociedad created most of the danger at Valencia, while Elche created 2.47 of the total in the other match. Elche’s pressure increased after Jon Martín’s dismissal with Sociedad leading 2–0. The identical final scores therefore conceal different conditions that would need to recur in another fixture.

The 3–0 defeat to Atlético was goalless until an 84th-minute penalty, with two further late goals following. Sociedad themselves created only 0.25 xG, so the eventual high total depended entirely on Atlético. By contrast, the 0–0 with Celta contained only 1.34 combined xG and no Sociedad second-half targets, a more genuinely restricted attacking game. For the next match, identify whether both sides can create meaningful chances or whether the total relies on one opponent exploiting Sociedad. A repeat of the Elche openness cannot be assumed without accounting for the dismissal, and the Atlético score does not show that the match was full of goals or clear chances from the outset.

Real Sociedad scored three in both away wins at Elche and Valencia, but created 0.58 xG in the former and 2.65 in the latter. At Elche, their first two goals arrived from a combined first-half chance total of only 0.20 xG, followed by another low-value finish for the late winner. Repeating that return would require exceptional conversion. At Valencia, 21 attempts and six targets supported a much larger chance total, although Carlos Soler’s penalty contributed substantially.

The 2–1 win over Espanyol offered another useful attacking model: Sociedad put ten shots on target and generated 1.82 xG, with 1.55 arriving after half-time. That sustained second-half threat contrasts with the 0–0 against Celta, where eight second-half attempts produced no targets and only 0.19 xG. Against Atlético, the entire match brought just 0.25 xG. For the next opponent, the second-goal question depends on the quality and accuracy of Sociedad’s opportunities rather than whether they have recently scored three. A performance resembling Valencia or the second half against Espanyol supplies a clearer basis; another Elche-level chance total would leave the result heavily dependent on finishing well above the chances created.

Real Sociedad scored three at Elche from only 0.58 xG, but failed to score against Betis despite creating 1.36 xG and an excellent late chance for Orri Óskarsson. The difference in goals was therefore much larger than the difference in attacking opportunity, and ran in the opposite direction. The Elche result also changed after Jon Martín’s dismissal in the 64th minute: Elche erased a two-goal deficit before Sociedad’s late winner. That is a specific route to goals at both ends, not evidence that every Sociedad match will remain open in the same way.

The blank against Atlético was more concerning for Sociedad’s own contribution. Eight shots produced only 0.25 xG, while Atlético eventually scored three. Against Celta, Sociedad created 0.97 xG but put none of their eight second-half attempts on target in a 0–0. Valencia provided a stronger two-sided environment, with Sociedad producing 2.65 xG and Valencia 1.55 in a 3–2 result, although a penalty and own goal contributed. For the next fixture, establish whether Sociedad can generate accurate, valuable attempts under normal conditions. A dangerous opponent alone is insufficient when Sociedad’s own attack resembles the Atlético performance; the Elche score should not be used as a normal conversion rate.

Real Sociedad took six first-half corners against Espanyol, Celta and Atlético, but those halves produced only 0.27, 0.78 and 0.17 Sociedad xG respectively. The repeated restart supply was therefore much stronger than the evidence of clear shooting opportunities, especially against Atlético. It is a useful distinction for the next match: early corner pressure does not require Sociedad to be creating high-quality chances or scoring freely.

The combined first-half counts were seven against Espanyol, six against Celta and eight against Atlético. In each case Sociedad supplied most of the total. Against Elche and Valencia, the teams reached five through a more balanced contribution, with Sociedad taking three and the opponent two. The lower examples were Betis, with four combined, and Real Madrid, with three; Madrid took no first-half corners despite creating more xG than Sociedad. The next fixture’s early corner total therefore depends on which route is available. Repeated Sociedad restarts can carry it, but when their contribution stays near two or three, the opponent must add enough. A strong opponent’s reputation or expected goals does not guarantee that contribution, as Madrid demonstrated.
