OVER AND UNDER 2.5 TOTAL GOALS

Manchester City goal totals depend on the opponent’s chance supply, not just City’s finishing

Sunderland’s three goals at Manchester City were supported by 3.57 xG, with Brian Brobbey scoring two chances worth roughly 0.92 and 0.97 xG. That is a different route to a high total from Palace’s 4–1 defeat: Palace produced only 0.66 xG and their goal came from a Donnarumma own goal, while City finished four chances individually worth less than 0.17 xG. Bournemouth’s 2–1 defeat required City goals in the 84th and 90th minutes. All three reached three total goals, but only Sunderland supplied sustained, high-quality opposition chances alongside City’s attack.

The two 1–0 games also need separating. Coventry and City generated a combined 3.49 xG, so the low total owed much to chances going unfinished. The derby, shaped by Foden’s 23rd-minute red card, offered a lower combined 2.10 xG, with just two City shots inside the box and six for United. Last season’s home Sunderland game makes the change particularly clear: City’s own xG moved from 2.42 to 2.82, but Sunderland’s rose from 0.71 to 3.57. The opponent’s access to dangerous chances explains far more of the shift from 3–0 to 5–3 than City simply becoming a higher-scoring team. A future opponent that creates little would leave the total dependent on City carrying it, as at Palace, with less room for ordinary finishing.

À surveiller

An opponent reaching close-range chances repeatedly supports a two-sided high total. If that threat is absent, assess whether City can carry the scoring without repeating Palace’s unusually efficient finishing.

OVER AND UNDER 2.5 TOTAL GOALS

Liverpool’s four-goal games came when the opponent retained a genuine scoring route

Liverpool’s two 2–2 draws were not simply games in which their own pressure became overwhelming. Newcastle scored twice on fast breaks and also created Yoane Wissa chances worth 0.51 and 0.41 xG. Liverpool’s 61% possession and 27 shots did not remove the threat behind their attacks. Forest likewise produced 11 shots inside the box and 2.30 xG, including a blocked 0.53-xG Igor Jesus chance and a second-half penalty. These opponents still reached valuable opportunities while Liverpool were trying to force the game at the other end.

Ipswich, Fulham and Bournemouth each stayed below 0.80 xG against Liverpool, and those matches finished with two, zero and one goals respectively. That is a more useful dividing line in this five-match sample than Liverpool possession: at Ipswich, accurate early finishing delivered two Liverpool goals, but the opponent supplied none; against Fulham, both attacks struggled to turn their opportunities into goals. Penalties also helped both four-goal draws, Liverpool’s at Newcastle and Forest’s at Anfield, so the exact totals should not be treated as routine. The stronger high-total condition is an opponent capable of sustaining valuable counterattacking or box chances as Liverpool attack. If the opponent’s contribution is restricted, Liverpool must carry much more of the scoring burden themselves.

À surveiller

Newcastle’s fast breaks and Forest’s repeated box chances provide stronger support for an opposing goal than possession totals do. When the opponent is held to an Ipswich- or Fulham-like chance supply, Liverpool’s own attack must do most of the work.

OVER AND UNDER 2.5 TOTAL GOALS

Chelsea’s seven shots on target against Hull carried less chance value than six at Fulham

Chelsea’s shots on target need separating from the quality of the opportunities behind them. At Fulham, six targets came within a 2.24-xG attack that included João Pedro’s 0.48-xG fast-break goal and Morgan Rogers’ 0.84-xG assisted finish. Against Hull, Chelsea recorded seven targets but only 0.89 xG from the entire attack. They still scored twice, with Rogers finishing a 0.11-xG fast break and João Pedro a 0.29-xG assisted chance. Their expected goals on target reached 1.97, well above their pre-shot xG, consistent with shot execution making the attempts more threatening than the initial opportunities suggested.

Arsenal supplies the weaker-target example: five Chelsea efforts reached the target, but 13 attempts generated only 0.39 xG and eight came from outside the box. Chelsea’s lone goal was Rogers’ low-value set-piece finish. Brentford then showed the opposite failure point, stopping six of Chelsea’s eight second-half attempts before they reached the target. For a future match, an opponent allowing valuable finishes inside the box gives stronger support to Chelsea scoring than one merely permitting several manageable attempts. Hull demonstrates that good execution can rescue modest opportunities; Arsenal and Brentford show how that scoring route weakens when chances remain low-value or defenders repeatedly stop the shots.

À surveiller

A Fulham-like supply of valuable chances provides a stronger scoring foundation than a large target count alone. Hull’s improved shot execution is a separate condition, and should not be assumed whenever Chelsea record five or more targets.

OVER AND UNDER 9.5 TOTAL CORNERS

Crystal Palace’s small corner contribution has kept even high-scoring matches below ten

Fulham took seven corners against Crystal Palace while generating 25 shots and 3.13 xG, but Palace supplied only one, leaving the five-goal match at eight corners. City’s 4–1 win also stopped at eight: six City corners and two for Palace. Palace’s second-half activity faded to two shots, no target and no corner as City held 77% possession. When Palace’s own contribution disappears, a busy opponent must reach an unusually large count to carry the total alone.

Ipswich was the counterexample in how the contributions formed, but not in the final threshold. Palace had five corners before halftime and only one afterwards; Ipswich added three after Palace lost Disasi in the 34th minute, leaving the total at nine. Leeds–Palace had five at the interval but only two later, with Leeds taking no second-half corners. Last season’s home City match finished with four, and Palace’s contribution was again only two. The lower-total case is strongest when Palace lack sustained corner production and the opponent does not reach eight or more. An early flurry, several goals or a high opposing shot count can all leave the total short.

À surveiller

A lasting increase in Palace’s own corner supply would weaken the low-total pattern. Without it, the opponent needs to carry most of the count; Fulham’s seven still did not reach ten combined.

OVER AND UNDER 9.5 TOTAL CORNERS

Everton’s high corner totals have come from sustained attacks at both ends

Bournemouth–Everton reached 17 corners because Bournemouth’s pressure survived halftime: their ten second-half shots included six blocks, and they collected seven more corners while Everton added three. The 0–0 at Tottenham reached 11 through a different balance, with both sides contributing in both halves and 14 combined blocked attempts across the match. Goals were unnecessary; repeated attacking endings kept the corner total moving.

Everton–United produced four goals but only seven corners. Everton’s second-half shooting rose from five attempts to 13 and yielded four corners, yet United added only one. Ipswich’s late territorial response similarly did not guarantee a high total: their second-half entries increased from 15 to 38, but they took only one further corner, leaving the match at eight. Fatawu’s 67th-minute dismissal interrupted that Ipswich response, making it a poor model for a full half at equal numbers. Palace offered the starkest missing contribution, taking no corners at all despite 11 shots and 1.96 xG. Last season’s visit to Tottenham also generated a high total, 14, shared equally. The repeatable condition is contributions persisting at both ends, rather than an entertaining scoreline or one team becoming busier.

À surveiller

A Bournemouth-like second-half corner response, with Everton still adding their share, supports ten or more. If either side’s attacks end without corners, rising shots or goals may not rescue the total.

OVER AND UNDER 9.5 TOTAL CORNERS

Liverpool’s busy first halves have usually failed to become ten-corner matches

Liverpool’s first-half corner totals reached five in four of the five recorded league games, but only the Fulham match reached ten by full time. Newcastle, Forest and Ipswich each added just two combined corners after halftime. This was not always a collapse in attacking activity: Liverpool took 18 second-half shots at Newcastle, ten blocked, yet won only two corners while Newcastle added none. Against Forest, Liverpool had 75% second-half possession, nine shots and 53 final-third entries, but each side won just one corner. Shot volume, blocks and territorial activity did not translate into the corner continuation the opening totals might suggest.

Fulham supplied the missing second-half contribution. They won five corners after halftime to Liverpool’s two, taking the full count to 8–5 despite a 0–0 score. Fulham’s final-third entries rose from 15 before the break to 31 after it. Last season’s same Anfield fixture also had a large late Fulham contribution: eight second-half corners, within a 9–6 full-match count, accompanied by eight blocked attempts in that half. The useful condition for a higher Liverpool match total is sustained corner-producing activity after the break, particularly from the opponent when Liverpool themselves remain around three to six overall. An active opening or a Liverpool shooting barrage alone has not been enough.

À surveiller

Fulham’s sustained second-half contribution is the relevant high-total model. Newcastle and Forest show why an early five- or six-corner count should not automatically be extended into double figures, even with Liverpool still attacking.

OVER AND UNDER 9.5 TOTAL CORNERS

Chelsea’s corner totals stay high through two different match environments

Four of Chelsea’s five recorded league matches reached ten corners, but the team carrying the volume changed with the balance of play. Fulham and Brighton held 62% and 74% possession and contributed six and seven corners, while Chelsea added four in each match. Chelsea made 22 and 38 clearances respectively, evidence that substantial opposition pressure was still reaching their defence even while Chelsea scored three and four goals. In those games the opponent supplied the larger share of the corner total.

Hull and Brentford reversed the balance. Chelsea held 68% and 60% possession and supplied ten and 12 corners, while each opponent added four. Hull made 32 clearances; Brentford made 34, including 24 after halftime when six Chelsea attempts were blocked. Arsenal is the exception that prevents turning the pattern into a blanket assumption: Chelsea supplied only three and Arsenal five, leaving eight despite 29 combined shots. Last season’s Arsenal–Chelsea meeting had reached 15 corners because Chelsea contributed ten, although the 2–1 result was identical. The next matchup therefore needs a credible source of sustained corner pressure: an active opponent can carry it when Chelsea attack less often, or Chelsea can carry it against a defence repeatedly clearing their attacks. If neither side recreates that volume, the scoring record offers no substitute.

À surveiller

Identify which attack has the conditions to carry the count. Fulham and Brighton supplied the larger share; Hull and Brentford conceded it to Chelsea. Arsenal shows that shots and a three-goal score can coexist with a total below ten.

OVER 1.5 FIRST-HALF GOALS

Hull’s two-goal first halves have come from set pieces or unusually efficient finishing

Hull carried the first-half scoring against Manchester United through Ajayi’s corner finish and Mendy’s set-piece goal, chances worth 0.52 and 0.28 xG. Those were tangible routes to good opportunities despite only five Hull attempts. Chelsea’s 1–2 halftime deficit was different: Belloumi scored an assisted chance worth 0.15 xG and a corner chance worth 0.06, while Rogers’ Chelsea opener was roughly 0.11. Three goals came from only 0.67 combined first-half xG. Newcastle then carried the two-goal half themselves, scoring in minutes three and seven from opportunities worth 0.14 and 0.06 before Wissa later had a penalty saved.

Coventry and Villa show why those outcomes should not become a general fast-start claim. Hull managed one first-half shot worth 0.01 xG at Coventry, surviving Awoniyi’s saved 0.72-xG chance. Against Villa, Hull’s five first-half attempts were worth only 0.08 xG, and the half stayed goalless. The stronger future route is set pieces producing substantial chances, as against United, or an opponent repeatedly accessing dangerous positions. The Chelsea and Newcastle early scorelines also required precise finishing from difficult attempts; without that conversion, their raw attacking patterns would support much less scoring.

À surveiller

High-value set-piece opportunities are a credible route to two early goals. A half filled with low-quality attempts needs unusually accurate finishing, even if similar games recently cleared the threshold.

OVER 1.5 FIRST-HALF GOALS

Bournemouth’s high-scoring first halves have needed help from finishing and the opponent

The three first-half goals at Newcastle included a genuine Bournemouth chance—Tavernier’s opener was worth 0.60 xG—but also a Thiaw own goal and Barnes scoring a roughly 0.05-xG attempt for Newcastle. Bournemouth created 1.29 xG before halftime while Newcastle created only 0.14. The high total was therefore not proof of equally dangerous attacks. Brentford’s 1–1 interval was more balanced in contributions, with Schade and Kluivert scoring, although their chances were only about 0.17 and 0.11 xG. Bournemouth had also missed better openings for António Silva and Rayan.

Everton shows how the second goal can fail to arrive even with a strong chance. Barry had a 0.82-xG effort saved before Scott scored for Bournemouth, leaving just one goal at the break. At City, Bournemouth also led 1–0, but City’s largest chances and both goals came later. Liverpool’s goalless first half had only 0.64 combined xG. Last season’s home Brentford game was also 0–0 at halftime, with much weaker combined chance quality than this season’s equivalent. For another two-goal half, Bournemouth need either multiple valuable opportunities of their own or a credible opposing scoring route; an early Bournemouth lead alone does not provide the second goal.

À surveiller

A second source of danger matters after Bournemouth score. Genuine chances at both ends support two early goals more reliably than assuming another own goal or difficult opposing finish.

OVER AND UNDER 4.5 FIRST-HALF CORNERS

Nottingham Forest’s early corner totals have been carried by different sides

Villa supplied all five first-half corners against Nottingham Forest. Forest made 21 clearances while Villa had 63% possession, so the total came from pressure on Forest rather than a shared corner exchange. Tottenham similarly contributed five of seven before halftime. Liverpool was the reversal: Forest supplied four of six, with five of their eight first-half attempts blocked. The successful halves therefore depended on the side whose attacks repeatedly produced defensive interruptions, not a stable Forest corner contribution.

Coventry is the useful warning against equating blocks with corners. Forest had six shots blocked before halftime but collected only one corner, and the half finished with two overall. Leeds also finished at two, despite four Leeds shots being blocked. Last season’s away Villa game reached five corners through a 3–2 split in Forest’s favour; this season it reached the same total with Forest contributing none. A future matchup can clear five even if Forest are quiet, but only if the opponent supplies enough. When neither side consistently produces corners from its attacks, a busy shot count alone offers little protection.

À surveiller

An opponent sustaining Villa-like pressure can carry the early total without Forest’s help. Otherwise, Forest need their own repeatable corner contribution; blocked shots by themselves do not establish it.

OVER AND UNDER 4.5 FIRST-HALF CORNERS

Newcastle’s early corner totals can rise through either shared pressure or an opponent’s siege

The 11 first-half corners at Tottenham were shared almost evenly, five for Newcastle and six for Spurs, despite Newcastle having no shot on target. Against Liverpool, Newcastle supplied two of six while blocking six Liverpool shots and making 20 clearances. Leeds supplied three of five while Newcastle made 25 clearances and managed only one attempt. Those are distinct routes to a high early total: a shared corner exchange at Spurs, or Newcastle’s opponent providing the extra corners during sustained pressure.

Bournemouth is the important exception. They took 13 first-half shots, five blocked, but only two corners; Newcastle’s two left the total at four. Hull also finished at four despite Newcastle taking an early two-goal lead. More shots or goals therefore did not automatically generate the needed fifth corner. Last season’s Tottenham visit reached nine before halftime with Newcastle supplying all nine, whereas the current version required both sides. The fixture has supported a high total through very different contributions, so the useful future condition is a credible corner source at one or both ends, not a fixed Newcastle share.

À surveiller

If Newcastle are under pressure, the opponent must turn that pressure into corners as Liverpool and Leeds did. Bournemouth’s many attempts but only two early corners show why shot volume alone is insufficient.

OVER AND UNDER 4.5 FIRST-HALF CORNERS

Everton’s early corner totals need an opposing contribution, even in busy halves

Everton’s first-half games against Bournemouth and Tottenham reached seven and five corners because both teams contributed. Bournemouth–Everton also had substantial movement into attacking areas, with 36 and 30 final-third entries respectively. At Tottenham, six of the teams’ 11 shots were blocked, consistent with attacks repeatedly meeting defenders rather than reaching goal cleanly. Neither team needed a strong scoring performance for the five corners to accumulate.

Ipswich shows why pressure alone cannot establish the total. Everton made 37 first-half entries and took ten shots, five blocked, yet won no corners; Ipswich supplied all three. Against United, six combined blocked shots accompanied only two corners, so a block is not automatically a corner either. Palace supplied none and Everton two. Last season’s away Tottenham game also cleared five before halftime, with Tottenham contributing four and Everton two, but that is support for a shared-contribution matchup rather than a universal Everton trend. When the opponent produces little corner activity, Everton’s early pressure has not reliably carried the whole total.

À surveiller

A matchup offering corner routes at both ends has stronger support for five early corners. If the opponent contributes little, Everton’s shot volume or blocked-shot count alone is insufficient.

OVER 1.5 FIRST-HALF GOALS

Brighton’s early defensive danger has come from restarts and breaks, not opposition possession

Chelsea scored twice against Brighton within 14 minutes through a corner chance for Lavia and a throw-in set-piece chance for Neto, then João Pedro added a fast-break goal. Chelsea had only 30% first-half possession but generated 1.94 xG before the interval. Brighton’s control of the ball therefore did not remove the routes to an early high-scoring half: restarts and transitions allowed Chelsea to reach valuable positions without long spells of possession.

Leeds exposed a similar vulnerability without producing a second goal before halftime. Bogle scored from a 0.90-xG corner chance, while Tanaka missed another substantial corner opportunity in the same minute and Calvert-Lewin had a 0.31-xG effort saved. Leeds generated 1.90 first-half xG despite only 32% possession; Brighton’s three shots were worth just 0.05 xG. Coventry also created 0.97 xG before halftime without scoring. For future early goals, an opponent capable of turning restarts or breaks into close-range opportunities can supply most of the danger even when Brighton dominate possession. Leeds is the limit on that inference: the route can be present without enough separate chances being converted to produce two goals.

À surveiller

Opponents dangerous from restarts and quick attacks can threaten an early two-goal half without controlling possession. Brighton’s own weak chance supply makes the outcome more dependent on that opponent converting.

OVER AND UNDER 4.5 FIRST-HALF CORNERS

Brentford’s early attacking dominance has not always produced five corners

Brentford took 11 first-half shots against Tottenham and scored twice, yet the half contained only two corners, both theirs. At Leeds they again took 11 shots and forced 27 clearances, but four Brentford corners and none for Leeds left the total below five. A one-sided opening can therefore miss the threshold even when Brentford attack well. The missing opposing contribution matters as much as the quality of Brentford’s own chances.

Sunderland and Chelsea provided the successful contrasts: Sunderland supplied three of six first-half corners, while Chelsea supplied three of five. The Sunderland half had only 0.83 combined xG, so dangerous finishing was not necessary for the corners to accumulate. Bournemouth’s first half reached two goals but only one corner, demonstrating the reverse separation. Last season’s home Chelsea fixture had just three early corners, compared with five this time, despite similarly modest first-half chance quality. For a future high total, Brentford either need to generate five themselves or face an opponent that keeps a corner contribution alive; an attractive attacking matchup alone has not reliably done it.

À surveiller

An opponent contributing early corners supports the total more than Brentford dominance alone. If the other side stays at zero, even an 11-shot Brentford half can stop short of five.

OVER 1.5 FIRST-HALF GOALS

Aston Villa’s four-goal half at Brighton was a defensive collapse before the dismissal

Brighton’s four goals before halftime against Aston Villa were already scored when João Gomes was dismissed in the 40th minute. The red card cannot explain the early collapse. Alongside a Lindelöf own goal, Brighton converted chances worth 0.96, 0.87 and 0.44 xG. Villa created only 0.16 xG in response. The route to a high-scoring half was an opponent repeatedly reaching excellent chances, rather than an open exchange in which Villa contributed much of the danger.

That distinction matters because the other recorded Villa halves did not repeat it. Arsenal–Villa had only 0.46 combined first-half xG; Hull–Villa had 0.64. Forest was more threatening but still goalless at the interval, with Lindelöf’s 0.44-xG saved attempt supplying much of Villa’s threat. Tottenham–Villa had 19 combined first-half shots but just one goal. Last season’s visit to Brighton also had four by halftime, yet Villa contributed 1.59 xG and two goals themselves. The same headline total therefore came from a completely different attacking balance. For another early two-goal game, either Villa must restore meaningful threat or the opponent needs the clear-chance access Brighton enjoyed; the prior big total alone does not establish either.

À surveiller

An opponent repeatedly reaching close-range chances can carry the early total. Without that defensive exposure, Villa’s own limited first-half supply makes two goals harder to support.

OVER AND UNDER 4.5 FIRST-HALF CORNERS

Tottenham’s early corners need attacking access from kickoff, not a score to chase

Four of Tottenham’s five recorded league matches reached five first-half corners, and three were already carried by Spurs alone: six against Newcastle, five against Forest and seven against Aston Villa. Against Villa, ten Tottenham attempts, six from inside the box, accompanied 20 Villa clearances. Against Newcastle, seven of Spurs’ eight first-half attempts came from inside the box. Those were attacks reaching the defensive line early enough to keep the corner count moving, rather than a late response to falling behind.

Brentford shows the opposite starting condition. Spurs had 51% first-half possession but all three attempts came from outside the box, with only 0.08 xG and no corner. Brentford contributed two, leaving the total well below five despite a 2–0 halftime score. Everton demonstrates the narrower two-sided route: Spurs supplied only two corners while Everton added three, so the threshold was reached exactly. In the same home fixture last season, the first-half count was 4–2, with six Tottenham attempts blocked and three Everton attempts blocked. The repeatable feature in that pairing is pressure meeting defensive resistance at both ends, not an assumption that Spurs will generate five alone. Against an opponent offering little corner contribution, Tottenham need the early box access seen against Newcastle and Villa; possession without penetration, as at Brentford, leaves that route exposed.

À surveiller

For an opponent likely to contribute few early corners, Spurs’ own box access must carry the total. Against Everton-like opposition, contributions at both ends offer another route, but a 2–3 split leaves little margin for either attack becoming quieter.

OVER 1.5 FIRST-HALF GOALS

Manchester United’s early goals have depended on set pieces and transitions

The first halves that reached two goals in Manchester United’s recorded league sample had identifiable routes. Hull scored twice before the break, through a Semi Ajayi corner chance worth 0.52 xG and a Nobel Mendy set-piece chance worth 0.28. Against Ipswich, United conceded first and Bruno Fernandes equalised from a fast break; Ipswich had also forced a save from a 0.34-xG counterattacking opportunity. These halves were not examples of United simply overwhelming the opposition with settled possession. They exposed danger from restarts and attacks moving quickly towards goal.

The goalless halves against Everton and City had little underlying chance quality: combined xG was 0.63 and 0.29. United’s derby half remained quiet even after Foden’s 23rd-minute dismissal gave them an extra player. Fulham’s 0–0 interval was a different exception. The teams generated 2.55 combined xG, but eight of United’s 17 attempts were blocked and only two reached the target; Fulham missed a 0.49-xG Gonzalo García chance. Last season’s visit to Fulham also reached halftime goalless despite 2.21 combined xG. A blank interval can therefore reflect either a genuinely quiet opening or repeated failures to finish. For another early two-goal game, exposed set pieces and transition chances are stronger evidence than United’s shot count alone, while Fulham shows that good chances still need execution.

À surveiller

Restarts yielding close-range attempts or open transitions offer a clearer early scoring route. Numerous blocked United shots without dangerous opposition chances are a weaker basis for expecting two before halftime.

OVER AND UNDER 4.5 FIRST-HALF CORNERS

Manchester City’s early corners can build even when their shooting chances do not

Manchester City’s derby is the clearest reason to separate first-half corners from attacking quality. City earned four corners before halftime despite taking only two shots, both blocked and both outside the box; United’s one corner took the total to five. Foden’s dismissal in the 23rd minute also makes this a disrupted half, rather than a normal City attacking baseline. Bournemouth and Coventry also reached five or more before halftime with City contributing four. Against Coventry, that came alongside nine City shots, all inside the box, five blocked, and 18 Coventry clearances. The same corner contribution therefore arose in both a heavily obstructed attack and a much more dangerous one.

Palace is the counterexample: City produced 11 first-half shots, nine inside the box and six on target, but only two corners. None of those shots was blocked, and Palace’s two corners left the half at four. More shots did not create more stoppages at the byline. Sunderland’s contribution matters too: City took two first-half corners in both the current home fixture and last season’s equivalent, but Sunderland supplied three this time rather than one, turning a three-corner half into five. For another early high total, either City need repeated defensive interruptions or the opponent must provide a meaningful share; clean shots reaching goal can leave a lively half short of corners.

À surveiller

A defence repeatedly blocking or clearing City’s attacks supports early corner accumulation. If City’s shots reach goal cleanly, an active opposing attack becomes more important to reaching five.

OVER AND UNDER 4.5 FIRST-HALF CORNERS

Liverpool’s early corner totals can be carried by the opponent even when Liverpool dominate possession

Four of Liverpool’s five recorded league matches reached five first-half corners, and Forest shows why Liverpool’s own possession is not the main explanation. Liverpool held 63% of the ball but took only four shots, two inside the box, and won two corners. Forest reached seven shots inside the box, had five attempts blocked and supplied four corners. The opening total reached six because the visitors were turning their smaller possession share into attacks that reached the defensive line.

The same home fixture last season also passed the threshold, but through the opposite contribution: Liverpool won seven first-half corners to Forest’s one, with ten attempts and five blocked shots. A repeated high total against the same club therefore did not mean the same team or process drove it. Ipswich and Fulham supplied three first-half corners apiece in the current meetings, while Liverpool added two and three. Bournemouth was the exception, with only three combined: Liverpool had one and Bournemouth two as the hosts took just three early shots. For another matchup, a Liverpool attack that is not carrying the count needs an opponent whose attacks remain active enough to contribute. A large Liverpool possession share cannot establish five corners without that contribution or sustained Liverpool pressure.

À surveiller

A Forest-like opponent reaching the box and meeting blocks can carry early corners despite having less possession. If the opponent is quieter and Liverpool produce only one or two corners, the recent high-total sequence offers little protection.

OVER 1.5 FIRST-HALF GOALS

Chelsea’s early goals are strongest when fast breaks and restarts produce valuable chances

Four of Chelsea’s five recorded league matches contained at least two first-half goals, but the successful games split between strong chance creation and unusually productive finishing. At Fulham, João Pedro scored a 0.48-xG fast-break chance in the first minute and Morgan Rogers finished a 0.84-xG assisted chance before halftime. Chelsea generated 1.99 first-half xG. Against Brighton, Roméo Lavia’s corner goal, Pedro Neto’s throw-in-sequence finish and João Pedro’s fast-break goal came from chances worth approximately 0.54, 0.32 and 0.46 xG. Chelsea had only 30% of first-half possession but reached eight shots inside the box. Rapid attacks and restarts were providing valuable opportunities without needing long spells on the ball.

The Arsenal and Hull scorelines deserve less confidence as repeatable early-goal models. Chelsea’s first-half xG fell to 0.15 and 0.17. Rogers’ goal at Arsenal came from a 0.017-xG set-piece attempt; against Hull, his 0.11-xG fast-break finish was followed by two Mohamed Belloumi goals from chances worth roughly 0.15 and 0.06 xG. Those halves still produced two and three goals, but did so with much less chance quality. Brentford then kept the game 0–0 at halftime with 0.39 xG on each side. For another busy opening, an opponent allowing Chelsea valuable transition or restart chances recreates the stronger examples. A sequence of low-value attempts that happened to score offers a much weaker basis than the recent halftime results suggest.

À surveiller

Distinguish Fulham- or Brighton-like access to valuable early chances from the efficient finishes against Arsenal and Hull. Chelsea can create that threat with little possession, but fast breaks must reach good shooting positions rather than merely occur.

OVER AND UNDER 4.5 FIRST-HALF CORNERS

Arsenal’s early corner total is vulnerable when the opponent contributes little

Only the Coventry match reached five first-half corners across Arsenal’s five recorded league games. Arsenal carried that count themselves with five, alongside ten attempts, four blocked shots and 15 Coventry clearances; Coventry added one. The other opponents supplied just one, zero, two and two early corners. Without Arsenal repeating the five-corner contribution, that limited support kept every other opening-half total below the threshold.

Chelsea is the useful warning against substituting attacking quality for corner production. Arsenal took ten first-half shots, nine inside the box and six on target, yet won only two corners; Chelsea contributed none. Villa provided a different low-total environment: Arsenal held 66% possession, the same as against Coventry, but took only four shots and won three corners, with Villa adding one. At Brighton, Arsenal had no corner before halftime despite later finishing with six; the second-half response could not rescue the opening-half count. An opponent giving Arsenal repeated defensive clearances and blocked attacks can provide the conditions for sustained pressure, as Coventry did, but a five-corner Arsenal half remains something to establish rather than assume. When their own pressure falls short, an opponent able to sustain its own attacks is the missing route to a higher early total.

À surveiller

A low-contributing opponent leaves Arsenal needing to carry nearly the entire first-half count. Chelsea shows that several clean shots can still produce few corners, and Villa shows why a large possession share alone does not establish the required volume.
