Analyse de la MLS

Salt Lake’s blank at Colorado came from four shots, none on target and just 0.08 expected goals. The attack was almost completely suppressed. The blanks against NYCFC and Vancouver were different: Salt Lake generated 1.09 and 1.42 xG, including a saved chance rated 0.564 early against Vancouver. A failure to score does not have the same meaning across those games.

The 2–2 LAFC draw demonstrated a much higher ceiling, with 3.19 Salt Lake xG and 2.84 for the visitors. Houston’s 2–1 win contained a more modest supply, and both Houston goals came from difficult finishes. For the next fixture, a case for goals at both ends needs Salt Lake to regain access to worthwhile opportunities while the opponent can contribute its own threat. The Colorado performance is a warning about supply, whereas the Vancouver blank leaves more room for a different finishing outcome without requiring a complete attacking transformation.

Salt Lake beat New England 3–0 while losing the corners 1–11. They scored early, produced six shots on target from nine attempts and took no second-half corner. The successful attacks did not require sustained corner pressure, while New England’s chase accumulated corners without a goal.

Against NYCFC, Salt Lake were the chasing side: they took ten corners, eight after halftime, but lost 2–0. The LAFC draw also showed that plenty of shooting does not guarantee a corner advantage, with Salt Lake’s 22 attempts accompanying a 5–8 deficit. For the next opponent, the important distinction is between reaching good chances efficiently and repeatedly forcing corners. A Salt Lake win can occur through the first route while the corner margin moves against them. Conversely, falling behind can increase their corner pressure without improving the result.

Portland Timbers’ 0–1 defeat by Atlanta is a poor model for a genuinely restrictive matchup. Portland reached 36 penalty-area touches and 16 shots inside the box, but only three of 21 attempts reached the target. Twelve missed and six were blocked. Their 2.30 xG shrank to 0.66 expected goals on target, showing how little of the chance quality survived the execution of the shots. Atlanta’s goalkeeper made three saves; this was not a clean sheet built mainly on a succession of extraordinary stops. Atlanta also limited its own attacking contribution after halftime to four shots and 0.29 xG, so Portland’s failure to finish was not offset at the other end.

Minnesota’s 5–4 visit had a materially different route to a high total. Both attacks created substantial chances—3.19 and 2.98 xG—and Minnesota continued to threaten after falling 3–0 behind, drawing level before Portland scored twice on fast breaks. The comeback included a Marcus Caldeira finish from a 0.93-xG chance. Portland’s penalty and an own goal helped inflate the score, so nine goals overstate a normal finishing expectation, but the two-sided chance supply was real. Twenty of Portland’s 27 recorded league games reached three goals; the useful distinction for another matchup is whether the opponent can keep creating valuable chances while Portland attack. A Minnesota-like opponent sustaining its own threat gives a second route to goals. An Atlanta-like opponent reducing its contribution leaves the total much more dependent on Portland turning box access into accurate shots.

Portland Timbers scored at least twice in 14 of their 27 recorded MLS games, but the successful September examples depended on very different routes. Against Minnesota, Vincent Janssen scored a penalty, finished a 0.50-xG chance and added a fast-break goal from a 0.41-xG attempt. Kristoffer Velde also scored on a fast break. Those opportunities explain the attacking threat more usefully than the 5–4 score: Portland were getting valuable chances to a central finisher and then attacking space quickly. The total also included a Drake Callender own goal, so the five goals cannot be described as five successful Portland shots on target. Against St. Louis, both goals were Velde free kicks; Portland’s other 14 attempts produced no goal, and eight attempts were blocked. That 2–2 draw demonstrates a set-piece escape from an attack that was struggling to produce clean endings, rather than the same open-play supply seen against Minnesota.

Atlanta then showed that creating enough chances for two goals and finishing them are separate problems. Portland generated 2.30 xG and 16 shots inside the box but drew a blank: six attempts were blocked and 12 missed the target. Cole Bassett missed a 0.39-xG fast-break chance and Omir Fernandez missed a 0.33-xG assisted attempt. An opponent allowing repeated close-range chances or space before its defence is set therefore offers a better-supported route to a second Portland goal than an opponent merely conceding lots of blocked attempts. The St. Louis free kicks and Minnesota own goal should not be built into the next match’s expected return.

Portland Timbers’ recent corner wins have come when their opponents spent the second half clearing pressure without sustaining much of their own. Against Atlanta, Portland trailed at halftime but turned a 1–2 corner deficit into a 5–3 win: their 13 second-half shots included five blocks, Atlanta made 20 clearances, and Portland won that half’s corners 4–1. At San Jose, a 3–0 halftime deficit was followed by 42–18 final-third entries, 12 Portland shots and 27 San Jose clearances. Portland won the second-half corners 6–2 and the full count 9–5. These were repeated attacking attempts meeting resistance, even though neither match produced a Portland comeback. St. Louis supplies a different scoreline with the same separation between corners and clean finishing: eight of Portland’s 16 attempts were blocked, only three reached the target, and the corners finished 9–2.

Dallas shows why possession or falling behind alone is insufficient. Portland again increased their shooting after halftime, had four attempts blocked and forced 21 clearances, but Dallas still made 35 final-third entries to Portland’s 36 and won that half’s corners 6–4. Portland’s 61% full-match possession therefore ended in a 5–8 corner defeat. Across the 27 recorded league games, Portland won only 11 corner counts, lost 14 and tied two. The stronger case for a positive margin is an opponent whose own attacking entries dry up while Portland keep returning to the defensive line. An opponent that retains an outlet, as Dallas did, can erase that advantage even while conceding more possession and shots.

Sporting and Philadelphia produced seven goals from 2.16 combined expected goals, with an own goal completing Union’s comeback. The 3–1 win over the Red Bulls contained more than twice that combined xG at 4.41. Sporting’s spectacular score was therefore a finishing outlier, not the richest recent attacking environment.

Montréal’s 2–0 defeat contained 4.13 combined xG, including a saved Montréal penalty, while Orlando’s 4–2 defeat contained 4.03. Cincinnati’s 5–0 loss was almost entirely one-sided after an early dismissal, with Cincinnati generating only 0.02 xG. For the next match, distinguish a total supported by contributions from both teams from one Philadelphia must carry alone. Union can create enough to lift a game themselves, but reproducing the latest extreme scores would also require exceptional conversion or special circumstances. The opponent’s ability to create ordinary chances remains central.

Philadelphia scored four at Sporting from only 0.86 expected goals, including an own goal. Their four against Orlando had far stronger support at 2.93 xG and twenty attempts, although a penalty contributed. The identical goal return therefore concealed very different attacking foundations: one depended heavily on conversion and an unusual event, while the other contained a much broader chance supply.

The wins over Montréal and the Red Bulls also offered substantial support, at 2.95 and 2.82 xG. Five goals against Cincinnati need additional qualification because Union had a numerical advantage from the 16th minute and scored two penalties. These distinctions matter for the next defence. Philadelphia’s capacity to create multiple good chances is real in this sample, but the recent run of four- and five-goal scores is not a normal output to assume. The strongest evidence is the repeated opportunity outside the exceptional comeback and red-card match.

Philadelphia won 5–0 at San Diego but lost the corners 4–11. Two of Union’s goals came from fast breaks, while San Diego took seven second-half corners as the score moved away from them. The winner’s attacks were ending successfully without building the same corner volume as the chasing side.

Against Orlando, Philadelphia scored four with only 36% possession and finished level at seven corners each. Their 7–1 corner advantage against Cincinnati came in a very different setting, with Cincinnati reduced to ten men in the 16th minute. Montréal’s 6–1 deficit offers a less exceptional example of Union controlling the margin. For the next fixture, distinguish a match where Philadelphia repeatedly pin the opponent back from one where they attack efficiently into space while allowing territorial pressure. A likely Union win, even a comfortable one, does not resolve that distinction.
