Cincinnati failed to score at Nashville despite 1.74 expected goals and eight shots on target. Most of the supply came after halftime: the first half contained only one shot and 0.02 xG, while the second produced 14 attempts and several substantial opportunities. Philadelphia’s subsequent 5–0 win tells a different story. Cincinnati generated only 0.02 xG across the match after an early dismissal, so that blank reflected a severely restricted attack rather than a similar collection of missed chances.

More recent performances restored the opportunity supply without guaranteeing an efficient finish. Cincinnati produced 3.72 xG at Houston but needed a late penalty to reach two goals; Denkey had already seen two substantial chances saved around the hour. At Montréal, 1.97 xG and 18 shots yielded one goal. The three-goal draw with Charlotte also included a set-piece goal and a late corner goal. For the next defence, the key question is whether Cincinnati can create those opportunities at level scores, rather than relying on a second-half chase or late dead-ball chances to rescue the return.

Cincinnati took nine second-half corners against Charlotte after reaching halftime 2–1 down, finishing with a 12–3 advantage. At Houston, they trailed 1–0 at the break and took six corners after halftime compared with one before it. Their shot volume rose with that pressure: 17 second-half attempts against Charlotte and 20 at Houston. Those are useful examples of Cincinnati sustaining attacks while needing goals, rather than evidence that the same corner pace begins from kickoff.

The pattern is conditional. Cincinnati also trailed at Nashville but finished behind 4–6 on corners, despite producing 14 second-half shots. Against Montréal, a 6–4 corner advantage accompanied an 18–15 shot edge and a 3–1 defeat, a much smaller territorial payoff than against Charlotte. Philadelphia’s 7–1 corner win is especially unsuitable as a normal baseline because Cincinnati lost Obinna Nwobodo to a red card in the 16th minute. For the next fixture, the strongest case for substantial Cincinnati corner pressure combines a need to attack with evidence that the opponent is allowing repeat attempts.

D.C. United’s 3–3 draw at Vancouver contained 4.28 combined expected goals and 17 shots on target. There was genuine activity at both ends, even though six goals exceeded the underlying chance estimate. The preceding 2–1 defeat by Charlotte actually contained slightly more combined xG at 4.34, but D.C. supplied 3.40 of it and scored only once. Similar overall chance totals therefore produced very different scores and very different distributions of attacking responsibility.

The two goalless draws offer another distinction. Against Atlanta, D.C. contributed only 0.21 xG and no shots on target, leaving Atlanta to do almost all the threatening. Against Los Angeles FC, the combined xG was 2.33, but LAFC put only one of 17 shots on target and none of its second-half attempts reached the target. A future low-scoring expectation is more convincing when an attack is being starved of chances than when opportunities are present but accuracy fails. Vancouver’s open exchange is relevant only if the next opponent can contribute similarly.

D.C. United’s three goals at Vancouver came with 21 shots, eight on target and 2.47 expected goals. Two goals followed corners, so that return was supported by substantial attacking activity but also depended on set-piece chances becoming goals. The preceding home defeat by Charlotte was not a weak attacking performance simply because D.C. scored once: 31 shots, 11 on target and 3.40 xG included several substantial chances that went unfinished.

That is a much stronger foundation than the goalless draw with Atlanta, when D.C. managed four shots, none on target and 0.21 xG. The contrast matters for the next fixture because these are different routes to a low score—missed opportunities against Charlotte and very little opportunity against Atlanta. The win over Columbus adds another useful condition: D.C. produced 2.51 xG from only ten shots, including goals from chances rated 0.935 and 0.421. United do not always need a large shot count, but they do need either access to high-quality chances or enough sustained supply to withstand a few misses.

D.C. United took ten corners at Vancouver with just 37% possession, finishing ahead 10–7 in a 3–3 draw. They also won the corners 9–4 at Charlotte with 39% possession despite losing 3–1. These matches show why the ball share alone is a poor guide to D.C.’s corner production: they generated 21 and 17 shots respectively, enough attacking activity to accumulate corners while spending less time in possession.

The size of the advantage is a separate question. Vancouver’s seven corners kept the margin to three despite D.C.’s high total. In the 2–1 win over Columbus, D.C. created better scoring chances but lost the corners 3–5, showing that efficient attacks need not produce repeated corner pressure. Even 31 shots against Charlotte in the later meeting yielded only four corners. For the next match, look for the combination of sustained D.C. attacking sequences and a restrained opposing corner count. Neither a high shot total nor a likely positive result is sufficient on its own.

Columbus and New York produced only one goal despite a combined 3.29 expected goals. Crew’s early chance rated 0.813 was saved, while New York missed a fast-break opportunity rated 0.491 before scoring late. The low score therefore concealed opportunities at both ends. By contrast, the 3–1 defeat by New England contained only 1.85 combined xG, with Columbus contributing just 0.40 and one shot on target. Four goals did not mean both attacks were consistently dangerous.

The 2–1 win over Miami was different again. Miami generated only 0.27 xG and scored through a Messi free kick, while a Columbus penalty contributed heavily to Crew’s 1.87. Three goals were reached with little sustained Miami threat. Before the next match, distinguish an opponent capable of producing good chances from one relying on a rare finish while Columbus do most of the work. The New York game shows how a genuinely two-sided chance environment can finish low; Miami shows how the threshold can be reached without that environment.
