Análisis de La Liga

Mbappé took ten shots at Espanyol without scoring, then eight against Real Sociedad and scored three times. The difference in accuracy was substantial: three targets at Espanyol compared with seven against Sociedad. At Espanyol, four attempts missed and three were blocked, including a missed high-value corner chance. The heavy shot count showed access to attempts, but did not guarantee that the best opportunities would reach the target.

His recorded La Liga volume subsequently ranged from six against Málaga and seven at Betis to five against Rayo, four at Elche and one against Atlético, all in full appearances. Minutes therefore do not explain that decline. The derby was also not solely a post-dismissal story: his only attempt came in the 40th minute, before Huijsen’s 52nd-minute red card, and was blocked. Betis saved four Mbappé attempts, including a penalty, while his Rayo double included a penalty goal. For the next fixture, separate the likelihood of repeated shooting opportunities from accuracy and finishing. A matchup that lets Madrid find him often can support volume even when goals fail to arrive; one that restricts his access, as Atlético did, requires a different expectation despite the full workload.

Yamal attempted 79 passes at Valencia, including 69 in the opposition half, during a full La Liga appearance in which Barcelona made 792 team passes. That was his largest recorded return. Other full matches with strong Barcelona control produced 55 against Athletic, 40 against Rayo, 53 against Racing and 52 at Sevilla. Barcelona held 69–70% possession in those games, so dominance alone did not reproduce the Valencia level of personal involvement.

The Levante comparison separates minutes from team volume. Barcelona attempted 782 passes, almost as many as at Valencia, but Yamal played 66 minutes and attempted 36. His 65-minute Elche appearance produced 29 in a lower-volume team game. Even among full appearances, the Rayo count was smaller than Racing’s despite nearly identical Barcelona totals, 648 and 646. For the next matchup, a larger Yamal passing return needs both a long workload and repeated involvement in the attacking half. A prediction that Barcelona will have most of the ball is only the first condition; it does not establish how much of that circulation will pass through him or how long he will remain on the field.

Real Sociedad took 11 corners against Celta without scoring and nine against Atlético while losing 3–0. The Atlético match is the clearest warning against treating corners as a proxy for dangerous chances: Sociedad’s nine restarts accompanied only 0.25 xG, while Atlético produced 1.92 xG from three corners and other attacking routes. Sociedad can sustain restart pressure even when their finishing opportunities remain poor.

They also led the corner count 7–4 in a 4–1 defeat at Real Madrid, with three corners before half-time to Madrid’s none. Across the seven recorded league matches, Sociedad won the corner comparison six times; Valencia was the exception, winning it 7–5 while losing the match 3–2. Valencia’s five second-half corners came as the home side chased Sociedad’s lead, showing how the opponent’s response can overturn a modest interval advantage. For the next fixture, Sociedad’s corner case is stronger when their own repeated restarts are accompanied by limited opposing supply. Their ability to score is a separate consideration: Celta and Atlético show that a goal drought does not necessarily end their corner pressure, while Valencia shows that a winning attack does not guarantee the corner advantage.

Only Espanyol’s Sociedad match reached ten corners in the recorded La Liga sample, with Sociedad supplying seven and Espanyol three. The other totals were one against Levante, eight against Madrid, four against Sevilla, seven at Osasuna, eight at Rayo and six against Elche. Several of those matches contained goals and substantial shooting without enough corners to reach double figures.

Elche’s game is particularly informative: Espanyol took 23 shots while facing ten men for most of the match, but each side earned only three corners. Against Levante, 16 Espanyol shots and three goals produced no Espanyol corner at all. Madrid’s eight-corner contribution also failed to carry the total to ten because Espanyol contributed none. For a future high total, there needs to be a credible source of additional corners, not simply an expectation of pressure or goals. Either Espanyol must produce more than their usual modest contribution or the opponent must supply enough to compensate. Sociedad achieved the shared total, but it was not a pattern repeated across the other attacking environments.

Elche’s matches against Barcelona, Racing, Sociedad and Real Madrid all contained five goals in the recorded La Liga sample. Combined xG was approximately 5.08, 2.75, 3.05 and 4.41 respectively. Barcelona’s total was supported by a large one-sided supply of clear chances, while Racing and Sociedad required much more productive finishing to reach the same number of goals. The identical final total does not make those matches equally strong examples of repeatable scoring opportunity.

The Sociedad game included an opposition dismissal, and Madrid’s opening goal was an Elche own goal. The later 3–1 Espanyol match involved Elche playing almost the entire game with ten men and conceding through another own goal. Athletic’s 1–1 draw had about 3.26 combined xG, more than the Racing or Sociedad five-goal games, although Elche’s contribution was mainly a penalty. For the next fixture, identify whether the opponent can create a Barcelona- or Madrid-like volume of valuable opportunities and whether Elche can contribute independently. A run of high totals is informative only after separating sustained chance creation from penalties, own goals and exceptional finishing.

Deportivo scored first against Elche, Málaga and Valencia in the recorded La Liga matches, but the openings had different foundations. Aubameyang’s Elche goal came from a modest-value attempt in a half where Deportivo generated only 0.11 xG. At Málaga, he converted an exceptionally high-value assisted chance. Valencia’s opening goal was an own goal, followed soon afterwards by an Aubameyang fast-break finish. These routes should not be treated as one repeatable pattern of early attacking dominance.

Against Betis, Deportivo created only 0.06 first-half xG and conceded before the interval, then produced a major second-half attacking surge. That later improvement helped them equalise but could not change which side scored first. Villarreal also scored before Deportivo, while the Getafe and Sevilla matches remained goalless at half-time before the opponent broke through. Angeliño’s dismissal against Sevilla occurred after the opening goal, so it cannot explain why Deportivo conceded first. For the next fixture, the strongest opening-goal case needs credible early opportunities, not just confidence in their eventual scoring ability. Their Betis recovery shows how a productive full-match attack can still begin slowly.

Alavés scored five against Osasuna from 1.20 xG, but only once at Rayo from 2.00 xG and once at Racing from 1.98. The five-goal result was therefore primarily an exceptionally productive finishing match, not their largest supply of chances. At Rayo, Toni Martínez missed two valuable assisted or breakaway opportunities and hit the post with another, providing a concrete explanation for the lower score despite stronger chance quality.

The 3–0 Getafe win had a different advantage: Getafe lost Femenía before half-time, and all three Alavés goals arrived from the 73rd minute onwards. Against Valencia, Alavés generated 1.05 xG and three targets without scoring, while Athletic restricted them to just 0.05 xG and no targets. Those blanks distinguish missed opportunity from near-total suppression. For a future multiple-goal case, the stronger foundation is access to repeated worthwhile openings, as at Rayo, rather than projecting the Osasuna conversion. The Getafe numerical advantage and late goals also should not become routine assumptions. An opponent capable of limiting Alavés to very few attempts changes the scoring case substantially.

Villarreal conceded the opening goal against Racing, Atlético, Alavés and Málaga. Those starts did not all reflect the same weakness. Racing opened through a penalty, while Málaga scored in the 12th minute with its only first-half attempt. Villarreal went on to create 3.33 xG at Málaga and win 3–1, so conceding first was compatible with a strong overall attacking performance and very limited opposing shot volume.

At Atlético, Villarreal had already created 1.44 first-half xG without scoring before the hosts opened in the 59th minute. At Alavés, a valuable Lucas Boyé chance supplied the only goal, despite Villarreal’s larger possession and shot totals. The opposite pattern appeared against Deportivo and Betis: Villarreal scored first but lost, with Betis subsequently sustaining much stronger chance creation. Against Levante, Villarreal’s 41st-minute opener was followed by an equaliser one minute later. For the next match, opening-goal expectations need the timing and quality of the earliest chances, not the likely final winner or possession leader. Villarreal can dominate much of a game yet concede the first isolated opportunity, and scoring first has not consistently protected their lead.

Betis’s 1–0 win over Real Sociedad was goalless at half-time after the teams combined for only 0.45 xG. After the interval they produced approximately 2.15 xG, with Betis taking 15 shots and Sociedad seven. The final one-goal score therefore reflected missed opportunities as well as a quiet start. At Deportivo, the shift was even more one-sided: the hosts went from 0.06 first-half xG to 2.04 in the second half while pursuing Betis’s 1–0 lead.

A low half-time score does not always indicate that chances are waiting to arrive, however. Real Madrid had already created 2.09 xG against Betis before half-time without scoring, and the game still finished 1–0 to Betis after a saved Madrid penalty. Villarreal went the other way: all three goals arrived before the break, even though the teams generated another 2.42 combined xG afterwards. These examples make the timing of chances more informative than the timing of goals alone. For a future Betis match, distinguish a genuinely quiet half from a scoreless half full of valuable attempts, then assess whether the team trailing is actually increasing its pressure. Neither a blank interval nor an early cluster of goals guarantees the pace of scoring that follows.
