Análisis de La Liga

Atlético won 3–1 at Sevilla and 3–0 at Real Sociedad but lost the corner counts 2–4 and 3–9. They then beat Osasuna 4–0 while winning corners 8–0. Those recorded La Liga results show that scoring superiority can arise from very different territorial patterns. Against Sociedad, all three Atlético goals arrived from the 84th minute onwards, including a penalty, while the hosts had already built a much larger corner count.

The Athletic match reverses the relationship: Atlético lost 3–0 but won corners 8–3, including all five second-half corners. Málaga also allowed a favourable 6–1 margin, whereas Villarreal and Real Madrid produced narrower 5–3 and 3–1 counts. Both of those matches included dismissals, on Atlético’s side against Villarreal and Madrid’s side in the derby. For a future substantial margin, identify whether Atlético can sustain corner-winning pressure and keep the opponent’s own count low. The Osasuna and Málaga games provide that combination. The Sevilla and Sociedad victories demonstrate why expected goals, an anticipated win or efficient late scoring do not establish it by themselves.

Athletic’s 2–0 defeat at Barcelona contained approximately 4.48 combined xG, while their 3–0 win over Atlético contained only about 2.43. The lower final total was not the less dangerous match: Barcelona created numerous valuable opportunities but scored twice, whereas Athletic converted efficiently against Atlético. That contrast makes the score sequence an unreliable shortcut for the next match’s goal potential.

Other low totals had different foundations. Celta’s 0–2 defeat contained 3.20 combined xG, and the Elche draw 3.26, although Elche’s contribution was dominated by a penalty. The Alavés goalless draw was more limited at roughly 1.67 combined xG, with Athletic’s saved penalty supplying a substantial portion and Alavés creating almost nothing. Sevilla’s four-goal match included Athletic playing most of it with ten men. For a future higher total, the useful distinction is whether both attacks can create, or whether one side must carry the scoring. A Barcelona-like one-sided chance supply can threaten a large total, but an Alavés-like lack of opposing threat puts much more pressure on Athletic’s own finishing.

Athletic scored three against Atlético from 1.41 xG and four targets, but only once against Elche from 2.42 xG. Their 2–0 win at Celta had a stronger opportunity base, with 2.64 xG and seven targets. The recent multiple-goal results therefore contain different levels of support: Celta allowed repeated good openings, while Atlético’s defeat depended more on Athletic converting a smaller supply efficiently.

Elche’s match included an early missed Iñaki Williams chance and a Navarro effort against the post before Williams eventually scored. Alavés then held Athletic scoreless despite 24 attempts, six targets and 1.62 xG; a saved penalty accounted for almost half of that xG total. Barcelona presented a different failure mode, restricting Athletic to five shots, no targets and 0.25 xG. For a future two-goal expectation, distinguish a team failing to finish worthwhile chances from one prevented from creating them. The Celta and Elche performances support attacking opportunity more than the Barcelona blank, but the Atlético score should not establish a normal conversion rate. A large shot count can also conceal the penalty-heavy quality profile seen against Alavés.

Athletic’s recorded La Liga clean sheets came against Celta, Atlético and Alavés, but the opposing threat differed. Celta generated 0.56 xG and two targets, while Alavés produced only two shots, no targets and 0.05 xG. Atlético generated 1.02 xG and five targets despite losing 3–0. The Alavés shutout therefore has a stronger suppression basis than treating all three results as equally secure defending.

Elche’s goal also needs context: it came from a penalty, with their other two attempts contributing only about 0.05 xG. That 1–1 draw did not show sustained two-sided threat in the same way a match with repeated clear chances would. Barcelona, by contrast, generated 4.23 xG while holding Athletic to five shots and no targets. Sevilla’s 3–1 win included Athletic losing Berchiche in the 11th minute. For a future shared scoring result, both attacking routes need to be established independently. An opponent restricted like Alavés or Elche may offer little outside a special event, while Barcelona demonstrate that a strong opposing attack can also suppress Athletic’s own contribution.

Athletic won corners 10–3 against Sevilla, 7–4 at Celta, 7–1 against Elche and 5–1 against Alavés in the recorded La Liga matches. They lost 5–12 at Barcelona and 3–8 against Atlético. The Atlético comparison is especially revealing: Athletic won 3–0 on goals while losing corners by five and taking none after half-time. Effective finishing from fewer attacks did not translate into corner superiority.

Against Elche and Alavés, Athletic held 67% and 69% possession while the opponents supplied only one corner each. That restricted opposition contribution made a substantial margin possible without Athletic needing double-digit corners. The Sevilla match reached ten Athletic corners despite their early red card, with eight after half-time as they pursued a game they eventually lost 3–1; it is an unusual match state rather than a standard numerical-advantage story. Barcelona supplied the opposite environment, limiting Athletic’s attacking opportunities while producing 12 corners themselves. For the next fixture, a large Athletic margin is best supported by sustained own production and a low-contributing opponent, not merely an expectation that Athletic will score or win.

Budimir’s five targets at Alavés included three headers, a saved left-footed chance and a penalty goal. That gives a more useful explanation than simply treating the six-shot performance as his normal La Liga workload: Osasuna repeatedly found him for headed attempts, while the penalty supplied an additional target. His two targets against Levante were also headers, one from a throw-in set piece and one from an assisted opportunity. A match that allows Osasuna to deliver that service offers a specific route to repeated accurate attempts.

Other results show the limits. His only attempt against Getafe was a successful penalty, so the goal did not establish a broader shooting supply. At Celta he produced two targets in 32 substitute minutes, but entered after Marcos Alonso’s dismissal and again benefited from a penalty. Against Espanyol, a full appearance produced just one missed header; against Rayo, two attempts produced one target and a goal. He also had no shot in 30 substitute minutes at Atlético. For the next opponent, the strongest case for multiple targets combines enough playing time with repeated service into good shooting positions. Penalties and a numerical advantage can lift the count, but are additional conditions rather than a dependable baseline.

Oyarzabal put two shots on target against Espanyol from four attempts, his largest recorded La Liga target count in this sample. Those two saved attempts carried only about 0.06 combined xG, while his other two shots were blocked. At Valencia he had a better individual chance profile, including a saved break and a missed assisted chance worth about 0.37 xG, but finished with only one target from three attempts. More valuable opportunities do not automatically mean a larger target count if the clearest chance misses.

Playing time and access also varied. He had no attempt in 32 substitute minutes at Betis, one target in 57 minutes at Real Madrid, and none from a 70-minute start at Elche. The Elche match included Sociedad losing Jon Martin in the 64th minute, but Oyarzabal had already gone most of his appearance without a shot. Against Atlético, his only attempt in 79 minutes was blocked. For the next match, multiple targets need a credible supply of personal attempts and the ability to get them through the defence. A long appearance or a strong team attack is insufficient if Oyarzabal is not receiving those shooting opportunities.

Gueye attempted 70 passes at Atlético despite Villarreal holding only 48% possession and making 498 team passes. Thirty-six of his attempts were in his own half. At Racing, Villarreal had more possession and a higher team total, but Gueye made only 56 passes, including 20 in his own half. A larger personal workload can therefore come through deeper circulation even when the team does not control the majority of the ball. Atlético’s late dismissal is also part of that match context.

The 85-pass Alavés game combined a full appearance, 76% possession and 59 passes in the opposition half, providing a different route to a large count. Shorter workloads then limited his totals: 59 in 62 minutes against Deportivo, 40 in 54 against Betis and 47 in a 53-minute substitute appearance at Málaga. Against Levante he returned to 87 minutes but made 56 passes, so minutes alone did not restore the Alavés peak. For the next opponent, assess both the expected workload and how much Villarreal use him in circulation. High territorial control can help, but deeper involvement may also support volume, while a smaller personal role can hold the count down despite long minutes.

Pedri made 72 passes against both Rayo and Valencia in the recorded current La Liga sample, playing 77 and 81 minutes respectively. Barcelona attempted 648 passes against Rayo and 792 at Valencia, so the much larger team total did not increase his personal count. His other starts ranged from 50 in 61 minutes against Racing to 66 in 86 at Sevilla, with 63 in 66 at Levante. The individual workload and role in circulation matter alongside Barcelona’s overall control.

Last season’s May matches provide useful comparisons rather than an automatic target. Pedri attempted 87 passes in 88 minutes at Osasuna and 103 in a full match against Betis, while Barcelona’s team totals were 661 and 705. Those personal returns exceeded the current Valencia count despite lower team passing totals. Against Real Madrid in May he made 67 in 90 minutes, showing that even a full workload did not guarantee the higher range. For the next matchup, the case for a larger count needs Pedri to remain on the pitch and be used repeatedly in circulation. Barcelona simply reaching a high possession or passing figure is insufficient when his share of that activity varies.

Vinícius attempted only 13 passes in a full La Liga appearance at Espanyol despite Madrid holding 63% possession and making 552 team passes. He later attempted 39 in 90 minutes at Betis with a broadly comparable Madrid total of 586. Thirty-six of those Betis passes were in the opposition half, compared with ten at Espanyol. The difference reflects how much he participated in the passing, not simply the minutes available or whether Madrid had the ball.

His other longer appearances produced 31 against Real Sociedad, 32 against Málaga and 37 against Rayo. Shorter workloads at Elche and Atlético brought 17 in 68 minutes and 11 in 54 respectively. The Atlético match included Huijsen’s dismissal in the 52nd minute, shortly before Vinícius’s recorded playing time ended, so the final team possession figure includes a long period after his involvement. For a future larger passing count, the key condition is repeated use in Madrid’s attacking-half circulation over a substantial appearance. His name, attacking importance or an expectation of Madrid dominance does not itself explain the count; Espanyol demonstrates that a full match can still involve relatively few pass attempts.

Antony went without a goal across his recorded La Liga appearances despite several busy shooting games. Four attempts at Valencia and four against Real Madrid each produced only about 0.08 xG, with two shots blocked in each match. Those are not strong scoring opportunities merely because the shot count reached four. Against Getafe, nine attempts produced four recorded targets, but three shots were blocked, two missed and another was stopped on the line. There was genuine threat, including a saved chance worth about 0.25 xG, without a goal.

The Villarreal cameo shows a different route: in 24 minutes Antony put three of four attempts on target, including a saved fast-break chance worth about 0.42 xG. That short spell contained a clearer individual opening than the whole Valencia or Madrid performance. He then took no shot in 62 minutes at Deportivo, so minutes and possession alone did not guarantee an attempt. For the next match, the scoring question is whether Antony can access better opportunities rather than simply continue shooting. More attempts can help, but a sequence of blocked or low-value shots is less persuasive than clear assisted chances or space on a break. A previous blank does not prove the next goal is due.

Baena’s largest recorded La Liga passing return was 51 against Osasuna, when he played 90 minutes and Atlético attempted 657 passes with 68% possession. Forty-two of his passes were in the opposition half, so the higher count reflected substantial involvement further forward rather than simply deeper circulation. His 43 passes in 85 minutes at Sevilla came in a lower-volume Atlético game, with 530 team attempts, showing that his personal involvement can remain strong without the team reaching its highest total.

Athletic Club provides the counterexample to using Atlético possession alone. Atlético attempted 631 passes and held 62% of the ball, but Baena made only 29 in 76 minutes. His shorter appearances also matter: 20 passes in 33 minutes against Málaga and 24 in 45 against Villarreal should not be treated as equivalent to a full-match workload. He made 37 in 67 minutes against Real Madrid, a game altered by Huijsen’s 52nd-minute dismissal. For the next matchup, a larger Baena count needs both enough playing time and a meaningful role in Atlético’s circulation. High team possession creates opportunity, but the Athletic comparison shows it does not ensure the ball repeatedly passes through him.

Güler’s recorded La Liga starts produced 41 passes in 64 minutes at Espanyol, 46 in 78 against Real Sociedad and 40 in 64 at Betis. Madrid attempted between 552 and 586 passes in those matches. At Elche, Güler played a similar 68 minutes but made only 26 passes as Madrid’s team total fell to 430 and possession to 44%. That comparison isolates a change in the passing environment beyond the effect of minutes alone.

His substitute appearances belong in a separate comparison: one pass in seven minutes against Málaga and 18 in 18 minutes against Rayo. Neither should be projected across a full match without considering the role and game state. Against Atlético, he made 20 passes in 54 minutes, with Madrid reduced to ten men in the 52nd; he was therefore on the field for only a short period after the dismissal. Madrid’s final 39% possession describes the whole match, not solely his minutes. For the next fixture, a higher Güler count is more credible with a substantial starting workload and Madrid sustaining circulation at the levels seen against Espanyol or Betis. Starting alone does not guarantee a high return if the team has less of the ball.

Bellingham took five shots against Málaga and four against Rayo in the recorded La Liga sample, but only one against Real Sociedad despite playing 78 minutes. He supplied four key passes in that Sociedad match while Mbappé took eight shots. That is a concrete example of attacking involvement being expressed through chance creation for others rather than repeated Bellingham attempts. His longer Betis appearance produced three shots and three key passes, another mixed contribution.

The quality and outcomes also matter when moving from shots to targets or goals. Against Málaga, two of five attempts reached the target, with two misses and a shot against the post; against Rayo, two of four attempts were blocked. The Atlético match produced no personal shot in 82 minutes, although he made three key passes and Madrid played with ten men after the 52nd minute. His one attempt in 22 substitute minutes at Elche reflects a different workload again. For a future larger shot count, Bellingham needs opportunities to finish attacks himself as well as enough minutes. General Madrid attacking strength or his creative activity does not establish that those attacks will end with his shot.
