Liga MX Analyse

Juárez’s games with Guadalajara and Monterrey reached 21 and ten corners almost entirely through the opponent, who supplied 19 and ten respectively. Juárez contributed two and none. The Santos match had a more balanced route to 18, with Juárez adding six to Santos’s 12. These are different ways of reaching a high total, and the next opponent must be assessed for whether it can sustain the required pressure.

The 1–5 defeat to Pumas is the sharpest counterexample: the match had only two corners, both for Juárez. Pumas scored five from five targets without winning one. Their goal threat did not translate into corner accumulation. The 0–2 loss to Pachuca also had only four total corners. For the next fixture, a large expected opposing goal tally is therefore not enough. If Juárez are likely to contribute little again, the other team needs a proven route to repeated corners, not merely an ability to finish attacks efficiently.

The 4–3 win over América contained about 4.18 combined xG and 20 targets, but the 2–3 loss to Atlante contained more opportunity by xG, about 4.75. The Atlante game included a penalty for each side, one saved, while the América match included several difficult finishes and a saved Cruz Azul penalty. Seven goals therefore reflected the way chances were converted as well as the volume of opportunity; it does not establish a seven-goal expectation against another opponent.

The clearest forward distinction is whether both teams can keep contributing. América remained active after trailing 3–0, while Atlante kept finding accurate attempts despite Cruz Azul’s recovery pressure. Santos supplied only 0.52 xG in a match that finished 1–0 despite Cruz Azul’s 25 shots. When the opposing attack offers that little, the total becomes much more dependent on Cruz Azul’s finishing. A strong opponent response can create a second route to several goals, but the exact derby score remains a poor substitute for checking the next matchup.

Cruz Azul and Monterrey were level at four corners each at halftime, but Cruz Azul added none after the break and lost the final count 4–6. Their second-half output fell to four shots and one target despite still needing an equaliser. The even halftime count therefore overstated their ability to keep generating attacking pressure. At Tijuana, a 5–3 early corner lead also narrowed: Cruz Azul added only one after halftime and finished ahead by just 6–5.

Against Santos the pattern reversed. A 2–2 halftime count became a 9–5 Cruz Azul advantage as they took 19 second-half shots while seeking a late winner. These examples show why the first-half corner margin should not be projected mechanically across the match. The useful question is whether Cruz Azul are gaining or losing access to repeated attacks, even when their possession remains respectable. At Tijuana they had 68% second-half possession but only six shots and one corner, so keeping the ball did not preserve their earlier pace.

Cruz Azul kept Santos to one target and about 0.52 xG in a 1–0 win, then allowed América ten targets and 2.01 xG in a 4–3 win. América took 18 shots after halftime while chasing a three-goal deficit; Santos never produced a comparable response. The contrast suggests that the opponent’s ability to remain dangerous after conceding matters more than treating every Cruz Azul lead as a route to goals at both ends.

Cruz Azul’s own contribution is not automatic either. They failed to score at Monterrey despite saved chances worth roughly 0.36 and 0.31 xG, while their 0–2 defeat to Atlas involved 24 shots but only 1.21 xG. The first blank included identifiable missed openings; the second included considerable lower-quality volume while chasing. For the next fixture, look for useful Cruz Azul opportunities and an opponent capable of creating independently. Their high-scoring América result is less transferable to a Santos-like attack, even if Cruz Azul are expected to control much of the match.
