Serie A Analizi

Matteo Politano attempted 36 passes in 73 minutes against Fiorentina, including 11 in his own half and 25 beyond halfway. Against Como, a full 90-minute appearance produced only 26, split eight and 18. The higher Fiorentina total came from greater involvement in both areas rather than simply more time on the pitch. Napoli also had a larger passing pool, giving more exchanges in which he could participate.

Inter limited Napoli’s team total to 340, yet Politano still attempted 23 passes in 62 minutes, with the same 18 opposition-half passes as against Como. Bologna and Fiorentina had identical Napoli team totals of 549 and 58% possession, but Politano played only 45 minutes against Bologna and attempted 17. That comparison illustrates why the team environment must be paired with his appearance length. For another high count, both sufficient minutes and the broader personal involvement seen against Fiorentina matter. A full match alone did not reproduce it against Como, while a favorable team passing pool did not overcome a shorter role against Bologna.

Trevoh Chalobah attempted 81 passes against Udinese but only 56 against Napoli, with 90 minutes in both. Como’s possession was almost identical, 59% and 58%, and its team passing pool was actually larger against Napoli. Chalobah’s own-half passes fell from 64 to 37 while advanced passes rose slightly from 17 to 19. The personal decline came from much less deep involvement, not a lack of total Como possession.

Genoa supplied 69 passes, including 56 in his own half, while Frosinone produced 58 with 46 deep passes. Como held 65% possession against Frosinone, its highest share among these four recorded appearances, but the team passing pool was smaller at 498. That reinforces the need to separate possession percentage, total exchanges and the amount routed through Chalobah. For another large count, a full appearance helps only if Como keep returning the ball through him in buildup. More advanced activity elsewhere can leave him with fewer passes despite the team appearing territorially dominant.

Manu Koné attempted 55 passes against both Fiorentina and Lecce, but needed 79 minutes in the former and only 67 in the latter. His passing locations were almost identical: 24 own-half and 31 advanced against Fiorentina, 23 and 32 against Lecce. Roma’s team passing pool was larger against Lecce, 677 versus 539, allowing a similar personal workload to accumulate within a shorter appearance.

Atalanta provided 65 passes across 90 minutes, with the increase concentrated beyond halfway at 41. The opponent’s dismissal occurred in stoppage time, so it does not explain the ordinary-match circulation. Inter produced 39 passes in 60 minutes, while Torino’s nine came in only 26 minutes. Those short outings should not be folded into a normal-length expectation without accounting for the role. For another fixture, Koné’s likely duration and Roma’s passing activity need to be considered together. A busier environment can compensate for fewer minutes, but a short appearance in a quieter or differently distributed game can sharply limit the total.

Fiorentina and Frosinone combined for six first-half corners, with Fiorentina taking four and the visitors two. That half also contained fourteen Fiorentina shots, so the home attack repeatedly reached situations ending in attempts or restarts even while falling 2–0 behind. The first-half corner totals against Roma, Torino, Venezia and Napoli were only two, four, two and three. Reaching five required more than an opponent scoring early or Fiorentina needing a response.

Venezia is the clearest distinction between dangerous attacks and corner accumulation. Fiorentina produced eleven first-half shots, 1.92 expected goals and two goals, yet took only one corner; Venezia added one. Good scoring opportunities were being completed without a large restart count. Roma generated ten first-half shots against Fiorentina but the sides took only one corner each. Against Torino, the visitors supplied three of the four corners despite the half finishing scoreless. For the next fixture, a high first-half count needs repeated restart production from Fiorentina, a meaningful opposing contribution, or both. Fast scoring and substantial attacking quality may coexist with very few corners, as Venezia demonstrated.

Como’s games at Napoli, Genoa and Frosinone had at least two goals before half-time, but the Frosinone match had the strongest underlying first-half chance environment. The teams combined for 31 attempts and 3.05 expected goals, with Frosinone scoring twice while Como failed to convert. At Genoa, four first-half goals came from only 1.26 combined xG; Como scored three from 0.93, including two particularly difficult finishes. That burst was much more dependent on conversion than the raw goal count suggests.

Napoli–Como produced three first-half goals from 1.56 combined xG, again with finishing lifting the total. The important counterexample is Parma: Como and Parma combined for 1.90 first-half xG but reached the interval at only 1–0. Como’s thirteen attempts and seven corners did not automatically create a second early goal. Udinese–Como had one first-half goal from 1.06 combined xG, with Como’s seven shots worth only 0.29. For the next fixture, an aggressive shot count is most informative when it includes valuable chances and a credible opposing contribution. Repeating Genoa’s four-goal half would require a much stronger opportunity base or another unusually effective sequence of finishes.

Bologna’s matches with Lazio and Sassuolo reached fourteen and seventeen corners through substantial contributions from both teams: 8–6 and 10–7. Napoli–Bologna reached ten in a completely different way, with Napoli taking every corner. Eight of those came after half-time, when Napoli increased its shot volume from four to eleven while Bologna remained largely unable to attack. A high total therefore does not require Bologna to contribute, but an opponent carrying the entire count needs sustained pressure of its own.

Atalanta–Bologna finished with only three corners despite 22 combined shots; Torino–Bologna had seven despite Torino’s territorial advantage. Possession and attempts are imperfect substitutes for actual restart production. Last season’s corresponding Bologna–Lazio fixture reinforces that warning: it had only three corners, compared with fourteen in the current meeting, although the combined shot count was 24 in both. The same fixture and similar shooting volume did not preserve the corner environment. For the next match, identify whether both teams repeatedly generate restarts or one side can sustain a Napoli-sized contribution. An opponent’s name or a high projected shot total alone leaves the mechanism unproven.

Atalanta’s 14–1 corner defeat at Roma was an extreme outcome, but the match chronology makes its cause clearer. Roma had already taken seven corners to none in a scoreless first half, alongside an 18–1 shot advantage. Atalanta then scored shortly after the restart, yet Roma added another seven corners while chasing the match. The pressure was therefore established before Atalanta had a lead to defend. Gianluca Gaetano was dismissed in the 97th minute, after Roma’s two late goals, so the red card cannot explain the preceding corner imbalance.

That collapse should still be separated from Atalanta’s other matches. Bologna won corners only 2–1 despite attempting 16 shots to Atalanta’s six. Sassuolo’s 22 shots produced a 4–4 corner draw, while Juventus lost corners 4–5 despite winning 2–0. High opposing shot volume has not automatically created a large corner deficit. The Roma scenario is most relevant when an opponent sustains territory in both halves and repeatedly forces restarts while Atalanta struggles to mount attacks of its own. An opponent that merely shoots more, or takes a lead, is not enough to reproduce the same margin.

Napoli kept Genoa and Bologna scoreless while allowing 0.67 and 0.25 expected goals. Bologna managed only five attempts and no corners, so that clean sheet reflected a particularly strong restriction on attacking access. Genoa had more activity but no second-half target. Those performances provide a clearer defensive foundation than simply counting the number of recent blanks.

The other opponents posed different tests. Como scored twice from 1.03 xG, with efficient first-half finishing turning modest opportunities into a lead. Fiorentina scored from a very difficult attempt in a match worth 1.14 xG. Inter created 3.86 xG and eight targets, including substantial chances during its comeback, and therefore supplied much stronger evidence of defensive exposure. Napoli scored in all five matches, but mutual scoring is not equally supported against every opponent. The next case is stronger if the opposing attack can sustain Inter-like access to valuable chances; a Como-like efficient burst is possible but less secure. Against a side Napoli can restrict as it did Bologna, its own goal may be much more plausible than a reply.
