Vancouver generated 3.33 expected goals against Austin but scored only once, with a missed penalty and several substantial chances left unfinished. Their three goals against D.C. United came from 1.81 xG. The lower scoring return therefore contained the stronger opportunity base, although the penalty needs separating from ordinary creation.

The three-goal wins over Salt Lake and Sporting had useful support at 2.58 and 2.57 xG; Sporting’s match also included a penalty. Galaxy’s 3–0 defeat combined a late penalty with two difficult earlier finishes. For the next defence, the strongest condition is repeated access to good chances, not simply the recent frequency of three-goal games. Vancouver’s attack has demonstrated that access in several matches, but the St. Louis defeat—1.15 xG and no second-half shot on target—shows that an opponent can still restrict the supply despite Vancouver chasing.

Vancouver took seven corners against Galaxy, Salt Lake and D.C. United, but the margins were +2, +1 and −3. Their own return was unchanged while the opponent’s contribution changed the outcome. D.C. produced ten corners and 21 shots despite having only 37% possession, so Vancouver’s ball share did not prevent substantial opposing pressure.

The Austin game offered a very different margin: Vancouver took six corners to none while losing 2–1. St. Louis’s 3–1 win also came with a Vancouver corner advantage, 6–2, as the Whitecaps chased after halftime. For the next fixture, assess the opponent’s ability to force corners as carefully as Vancouver’s likely count. A strong own total is insufficient for a large margin if the other side can keep attacking, and a likely Vancouver defeat does not automatically imply a corner deficit.

Toronto and Chicago produced eight goals from 3.20 combined expected goals, including an own goal in Chicago’s favour. Orlando’s 3–0 win over Toronto contained far more opportunity at 4.81 combined xG, with Toronto missing substantial chances. The eight-goal result therefore should not be treated as evidence of a richer attacking environment.

The two Nashville meetings were more restrained at 2.71 and 3.09 combined xG, but the distribution changed sharply: Toronto created 1.79 at home and only 0.52 away. St. Louis’s 3–1 win was also weighted toward the opponent, while the 1–1 NYCFC draw contained just 1.09 combined xG. For the next matchup, identify whether Toronto can contribute meaningful opportunities or leave the opponent to carry the total. A high score driven by both sides finishing difficult chances is a weaker baseline than sustained, balanced attacking supply.

Toronto scored four against Chicago from 1.41 expected goals, with three scoring attempts rated below 0.08. They then failed to score at Orlando despite 2.85 xG and several substantial missed chances. The contrast shows why the goal count alone cannot distinguish a healthy attacking supply from unusually efficient finishing.

The later Nashville blank was different again: Toronto generated only 0.52 xG and no second-half shot on target. At St. Louis, 0.97 xG and a late set-piece goal also represented a more limited attack than the Orlando performance. For the next defence, the question is whether Toronto can restore access to good opportunities, not simply whether they are due to score after a blank. Orlando’s missed chances leave room for a different outcome with similar creation; Nashville’s suppression would require the opportunity itself to improve. Chicago’s four-goal return should not obscure that distinction.

Toronto beat Nashville 2–1 but lost the corners 3–8, then lost the return meeting 2–0 with a 3–9 corner deficit. In the home win, Toronto took no second-half corners despite scoring both goals after the interval. Their successful attacks did not need to become repeated corner pressure.

Against NYCFC, Toronto had only 41% possession but won the corners 7–2, showing that a lower ball share does not automatically prevent an advantage. Chicago’s 4–4 draw brought a 6–3 Toronto edge, whereas St. Louis won the count 8–4. For the next opponent, focus on whether Toronto can turn possession into repeated attacking sequences and keep the other side’s pressure manageable. The Nashville comparison is especially useful because changing the result did not change who controlled the corner count; goal expectations alone would have missed that consistency.

The 3–3 Dallas draw contained 2.83 combined expected goals, with Dallas scoring three from only 0.98. Minnesota’s 4–2 defeat contained much more opportunity at 4.64 combined xG, although penalties contributed at both ends. Six goals therefore did not describe a consistent chance environment across the two games.

Portland’s 2–2 draw depended on two Portland free kicks, while City generated the stronger overall supply. Toronto’s 3–1 defeat was also weighted toward St. Louis, with Toronto producing 0.97 xG and scoring late. For the next fixture, assess whether the opponent can create sustained ordinary chances or must rely on difficult finishes and dead balls to contribute. City’s own attack has supplied useful opportunity, but extending the biggest totals requires either a stronger opposing contribution or another period of unusually efficient scoring. The two conditions should not be treated as interchangeable.
