Atlas scored twice at both Cruz Azul and Toluca, but those performances should not receive equal weight. At Cruz Azul they created about 1.39 xG before halftime, scored twice and reached the break ahead. At Toluca they were already 3–0 down before recording a target; both of their two second-half targets became goals, giving them two goals from about 0.94 xG overall. The latter return relied much more on converting a small number of openings while the opponent had a large cushion.

Their 1–1 draw with Pumas supplied a different signal: 20 shots and 2.47 xG produced only one goal, including a missed chance worth about 0.58 xG. That match offers evidence of access to scoring opportunities even though the second goal never arrived. For the next fixture, useful chances against an opponent still contesting the game are more persuasive than a two-goal consolation tally. The three goals at León also need their context: León lost a player before halftime, and Atlas’s second-half goals included a penalty.

Atlas’s 2–1 win over Tigres is a warning against treating goals as proof of attacking control. They scored twice from eight shots and about 0.64 xG, while Tigres produced 25 attempts, eight targets and 2.87 xG. Atlas were reduced to ten men in the 70th minute; Tigres later missed a penalty. The result shows that Atlas can remain dangerous with limited opportunities, but it gives little reason to expect the opposing attack to be held quiet in a comparable match.

Their clean sheets also came through different routes. Santos managed one target against them, whereas Cruz Azul took 24 shots and put five on target without scoring after falling two goals behind. At the other extreme, the 1–1 draw with Pumas brought Atlas 2.47 xG and Pumas only 0.64. For another game with goals at both ends, the more important question is whether the opponent can consistently create useful openings. Atlas’s own occasional efficient finishes cannot compensate for an opponent restricted to weak chances, and a clean-sheet result does not always mean their defence removed the danger.

Atlas took more corners after halftime than before it in six of their nine recorded Apertura matches. The reason was not always a late scoring surge. At Toluca, they were three goals behind at the interval but won the second-half corner count 4–0 after losing it 3–6 beforehand. Toluca took only two second-half shots, while Atlas kept seeking a route back. That reversal fits a change in which team needed to keep attacking more than a sudden reversal of overall quality.

The Pumas draw offers a more competitive example: Atlas’s corner count rose from three before halftime to five afterwards, with Pumas contributing four in the second half. Against Cruz Azul, Atlas went from no first-half corners to four after the break despite already leading 2–0. Yet the Santos win moved the other way, from four corners to one. The next opponent’s willingness to continue attacking, and whether Atlas must chase or defend a lead, therefore matter more than simply carrying a full-match average into each half.

Six of Atlas’s nine recorded Apertura matches reached five corners before halftime, but the composition varied enough to matter for the next opponent. Tigres supplied all nine in their meeting, while Toluca supplied six of nine. Atlas had no early corner against Tigres and only three against Toluca. A high first-half total in those fixtures was largely a measure of the opponent’s pressure, not an expectation that Atlas would trade corners evenly.

When Atlas had more of the ball, the total could remain low. They held 62% first-half possession against Querétaro but the teams took only three corners, and 65% against Atlante produced only two. The Pumas game reached five with contributions of three and two, showing a more balanced route. For another early high count, identify whether the opponent can carry the total or whether both sides are likely to contribute. Simply expecting Atlas to control possession misses the distinction between circulating the ball and repeatedly forcing play behind the opposing goal line.
